UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY L. JONES AND HARRIE E. FULLER, OF FREDONIA, KANSAS, SAID JONES ASSIGNOR TO SAID FULLER.
CALF-WEANE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,096, dated July 11, 1882.
Application filed April 26, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARVEY L. JONES and HARRIE E. FULLER, of Fredonia, in the county of Wilson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cali- Weaners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to [0 make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view 011 the line a; w in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line y y in Fig. 3.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference. This invention relates to calf and cow wean- 2o ers, and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A reprez 5 sents afiat metallic plate, to one side of which is secured a pointed spring-latch consisting of a pointed wire, B, coiled at one end, as at G, and passing through and clinched in one end of the plate A, so as to form an eye or 0 staple, D, on the other side of the latter. At the other end of plate A is secured a hook or catch, E, for the pointed end of the safety latch-pin. Said catch, which may be formed of wire, is likewise attached to plate A by passing its shank through and clinching it in said plate, thus forming an eye or staple, F.
G is a wire bail, hinged in the eyes or staples D F, and having pointed or barbed ends H, which project laterally from the plate A. Sharp points or barbs I are secured in any suitable manner upon the bail G.
The plate A is provided with perforations J J to receive the sharp-pointed ends K of a wire bail, L, which is secured in position by 4 5 bending the ends under the plate A, so as to form shoulders M, as shown.
The number of points or barbs to be used on our improved calf -weaner is immaterial, and their location may be modified without changing the spirit of our invention.
In practice the pin B is passed through the cartilage of the nose of the animal, and secured in the catch E, thus securing the weaner in position. The plate A will bear upon the nose, so as to hold the device from interfering with grazing; but if the head is thrown up for the purpose of sucking the barbed bail will swing back and prick the nose of the calf, while the points K will prick the cow, thus accomplishing the desired result.
We are aware of the patent to Brunny, No. 244,792, July 26, 1881, which shows a calfweaner formed of wire, with a safety pin latch and catch, and such we do not claim. By our improved construction the flat plate which forms the base rests upon the nose and serves to support the device without unnecessary pain to the animal. The safety pin or catch also forms staples upon the under side of the plate in which the barbed wire frame is hinged, which is only thrown into operation when the calf raises its head in order to nurse.
We are aware, also, that a plate is shown in the calf-\veaner patented to Hazen, No. 199,156, January 15, 1878. In this case, however, the plate is barbed, and serves an obviously different purpose.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The herein-described improved calf-weaner, consisting of the plate A, having safety latchpin B O and catch E, forming staples D Eon the under side of said plate, the wire bail G, hinged in the said staples, and having pointed ends H and barbs I, and the bail L, having pointed ends K, passing through perforations J in plate A, and secured by bending the legs of said bail so as to form shoulders M, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aflixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY L. JONES. HARRIE E. FULLER.
