PAD FOR HOOFS OF HORSES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. DEAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pads for the Hoofs of Horses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention in pads or cushions for horses hoofs consists of a cushion or pad which is made of india-rubber or gutta-pereha or other suitable elastic material, and is of a shape to fit upon and cover the under side of a horses hoof, having attached to its outer and exposed surface metal plates, one at each side of its portion fitting and covering the frog, and on its inner side a layer or layers of felt, cork, or other suitable material, all substantially as hereinafter fully described.

In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure 1 is a face view, showing the shoe and a pad or cushion made only of india-rnbber, &c., and in accordance with this invention, and as all secured in place upon a horses hoof. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-vertical section on line w :v, Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar, respectively, to Figs. 3 and 2, but showing an inner layer of felt, 800.; Fig. 6, a view similar to Figs. 3 and 4, but showing separate metal plates as at each side of the frog portion of the pad. Fig. 7 is a face view, on a reduced scale, of the pad shown in Fig. 6, but detached. Fig. 8 is a face view of the pad and shoe, showing the shoe of itself adapted to hold the pad in place.

I n the drawings, A represents the hoof of a horse; B, the frog; and C, the shoe, with a space, a, around its inner edge, b, between the hoof and the inner face, d, of the shoe, all as ordinary.

D is a pad or cushion, made of india-rubber, gutta-percha, or other suitable elastic material, of a shape in its parts'ff to cover the sole of a horses hoof at each side of the frog B, and in its central part, g, to receive and cover the frog B.

h h are two metallic plates, attached with cement or in any suitable manner to the outer face of the elastic portions f f of the cushion D, which are at each side of the frog-covering portion 9 of the pad.

k is a layer of felt, cloth, or cork, or other equivalent material or materials, covering the inner face of the elastic cushion, and attached thereto with cement, or in any suitable manner.

The pad constructed as above described is sprung into position with its layer of felt against the sole and frog of the hoof and the edges of the pad in the space a between the hoof and shoe, and in this position the whole is retained by the elasticity or spring of the rubber in its part covering the frog, and which is not connected with the metal plates.-

The pad may only consist of an elastic cushion such as described, or of such a cushion and either metal plates or an inner layer of felt, or other equivalent material, or both. The metal plates, as well as the layer of felt, 800., are desirable for obvious reasons.

A pad such as described is advantageous and beneficial for tender hoofs and also hoofs having corns.

Z Z l are lips upon the inner edge of the shoe for retaining the pad herein described in po sition, in .lieu of by entering it in the space a between the shoe and hoof, as has been explained.

The rubber or other elastic material used for the pad may be shaped to the purposes intended by molding it in suitable molds or otherwise.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The removable horseshoe-pad herein shown and described, consisting of a rubber body, D, adapted to fit the under side of the beef, and its central portion, 9, adapted to receive and fit the frog of the foot, having metal plates secured to its outer side at each side of said central portion and on its inner side felt or cloth, substantially as set forth.

2. In a horseshoe-pad,thetcombination,with the rubber body D, having the central portion, 9, to conform with the frog of the foot, of 9 5 the metal plates h h and felt it, the whole adapted to be held in place by lips l 1, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
