Description

JAMES TUCKER, on WASHINGTON, DISTRICT oF COLUMBIAi STOPPER `IEOR CHAIN CABLES.
Speccaton ofLetters Patent No. 26,722, dated Janury 3, 1860..,
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES TUCKER, of the city and county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful ChainStopper for Chain Cables; and
4I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in `the "following specification and drawings.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to `de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in `each of the figures.
Figure l, is an elevation of one side of my improved chain cable stopper. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view. Fig. 3, is a side elevation with one of the cheeks or stands removed so as to show the position of the chain in the stopper. y
The nature of my improvement in chain cable Stoppers consists in a groovedstock or base with a scored pawl and guiding staple or ring to guide the chain into the groove in the stock. i
In the accompanying drawings of my irnproved chain cable Stopper A, represents a port-ion of the deck of a vessel to which the bed or stock B, is firmly fastened by bolts or otherwise. This bed B, of the stopper is made of cast iron with a groove C, lengthwise through its upper side and deep enough in the center for that portion of the link to lie in which stands edgewiseand projects below the `underside of the link that lies flatwise on the surface of the b ed as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, of the drawings; so-that as the lower edgesof the links of the chain which stand edgewise are drawn through the groove the underside of the links that lie flatwise are` drawn on the bed as shown in Fig. 3.
When the bed is cast of iron the cheek D, is cast with it in t-he form shown in the drawing, and the dovetailing score E, is cast `in the opposite side of the bed B, from the Cheek D, for the shank of the cheek D,
which is made `dovetailing to fitlthe in the bed and fastened infthescore by the; screw bolts F, F. These cheeks D, D', are
perforated `for the journals or pivots of the pawl or locking block G,wlich ismadeof. i ,y wrought iron in y the` form gshown infthe* l drawing and provided with an arm lII,by`` 55 as shown at I, I, for the purpose ofapplying y which it is worked, whicharml is perforated,
ropes or chains toit, to markit, to stop and 1` i release the chain cable running `through the;
stopper. The cheeks D, D,`are` also perfo rated, for the ends of the bar J, fwhiclr pre-1 vents the arm H, from `falling over onto;
pawl G, is raised to` the chain, when the release the chain.
` There is a score K, across the end of1 the@ pawl G, which scoreis made so wide andl deep asto allow` the end ofthe pawl topass y down each side or astride of the linkthat stands edgewise, and betweenf` the linkst-hat.. t lie flatwise as shown in Fig 3, solthat the" ends of the pawl comeyinlcontact-or against` the top of thebed between "thellinks of the" chain which lie flatwise, and stop `andhold it fast until the pawl isl raised again to 1e lease it. The cheelQD, isomitted in Fig; 3, to show the pawl on the chain. i
. The staple L, is fastened into the `bed 13,121
to guide the chain properly intolthe stopperyg#` and I contemplate that two` pins, ,either with, or without rollers `on them may be:
used for the same purpose.
y so I believe I have describedand representedi` i the improved chain y cablewstoppergwhich I have invented, so as toenable any person .i
skilled inthe art tomakeanduseyit. I will now state what, I; desire to secure by` Letters Patentto wit.
I claim the guiding staple orring inconv binationwith the groovedstock and scored pawl, arranged `to operate substantiallyas` described. y i JAMES TUCKERQ Witnesses: y y
