UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW H. LORD AND BYRON L. SAWYER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
-ASH-CHUTE FOR FIRE-PLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,794., dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed December9, 1881. (Nomodel BYRON L. SAWYER, both citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash- Ghutes for Fire-Places, which are set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of an ash-chute embodying our improvements, with the usual adjacent parts of a house; Fig. 2, a plan view of the ash-chute with its damper; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the'same, taken on the line .70 w of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a detail section of the same, taken on the Iiney y of Fig. 3, showing the joints of the ash-chute and damper.
Our invention relates to an ash-chute provided with a damper to prevent the rising of dust.
The invention relates to certain features of construction whereby the chute is readily applied, and is provided with a self-closing i construction, application, and operation of an ash-chute embodying our invention, and will then point out definitely in the claims the specific improvements which we believe to be new and wish to protect by Letters Patent.
In the drawings, A represents an ash-chute, which is suspended from the floor a of a fireplace, a, and connects with the main ash-flue U, constructed in the chimney a. This ashchute is preferably composed of two castings, and a, which we have found it convenient to join together, as shown. On this ash-chute is pivoted a damper, B, which closes by its own weight, and is located at one side of, rather than under, the upper aperture of the ash-chute, the object of this damper being to prevent the rising of dust from ashes which have been discharged through the chute. The upper aperture of the ash-chute is surrounded by a flange for the purpose of suspending the ash-chute in a rabbet in the floor a, as shown in Fig. 1. V
The operation of our invention is as follows: By placing the damper at one side of, rather than under, the upper aperture of the ashchute,no ashes can falldirectl y upon it, as they must strike the bottom of the chute first. This causes a friction which retards their outward passage and renders the continual dropping of small cinders powerless to partially open and keep partially open the damper. By 10- eating the ash-chute immediately below the fire-place the heat of burning cinders in said chute is utilized in warming the rocm, and falling cinders do not acquire such an'in petus as to overcome the retarding friction caused by their passage over the bottom of the chute. The ashes which collect in the chute-are let down, as occasion may require, lby thrusting open the damper with a poker. By locating the damper between the ash-chute and main ash-flue, rather than across the main line, any
. number of fire-places on different floors can use the same ash-flue without inconvenience. Finally, by forming a flange around the top of the ash-chute, it is adapted to be inserted in old houses by comparatively unskilled workmen, and of course the manufacture of the ashchute can thus be centralized and consequently cheapened.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. The combination of a fire-place, an ashchute, A,immediately thereunder, and a damper for said chute at one side of the upper aperture thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of an ash-itlue, an ashchute tributary thereto, and a dam per between said flue and chute, but at one side of the upper aperture of the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The ash-chute A,provided withaninclined
