SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,033, dated November 28,1882.

Fodder-Press, of which the following is a full,

clear, and exact description.

Thisinvention consists of a hand-power press contrived for'pressing cornstalks into bundles for binding tightly together with bands or ties for the better protection of the stalks from the weather in the field, and also for greater convenience in handling and storing the stalks, the said machine consisting of an arrangement of the bench for holding the bundle and levers 1 for pressing the bundle, and also of a gage attachment by which to place the stalks evenly, all as hereinafter described.

A represents two side pieces of the press 0 bench or frame, and A a middle piece, the said side pieces and middle piece consisting of three short pieces of plank of suitable length and breadth, set up ed gewise parallel to each other and apart from each other about two feet, more 3 5 or less, on legs B, and connected together by cross-pieces 0, attached to the lower edges and by narrow boards D, one at each end. In the upper edge of each of these side pieces, A, and middle piece, A, is a deep concave notch, E,

40 in which the stalks of fodder to be pressed are laid, and each side piece, A, has two crooked clamp-levers, F, applied by a pivot, G, as shown in the drawings, to be brought down on the upper side of the-bundle to press it compactly in the notches E of the side pieces and hold it by means of the ratchet-bars H and catches I until the bundle is tied. The middle piece, A, has two arms, Q, to hold the stalks. The 1evers will be pivoted to the opposite sides of the side pieces, A, and on opposite sides of the notches E, so that the handles of the levers may be turned down alongside of the side pieces, also for convenience in transporting the press. The catch-pieces I, by which the levers F are engaged to these ratchet-bars H, are permanently attached to the levers, and said levers are arranged at their pivots Gr, so as to allow sufficient lateral play to swing the levers to and from the ratchet-bars enough to engage and disengage them with the said ratchets.

L represents end gages, by which the ends of the stalks may be placed evenly in the bundle. Saidgages are supported on the projecting portions of the cross-pieces C a suitable distance beyond the side pieces ot' the press by rods M, detachably connected to the crosspieces, and by hooksl\ and eyes 0, connecting said gages with the side pieces, A, the said gages being thus detachabl y connected to facilitate the application and removal of them as required. The cross-pieces O are also provided with the extensions P, for use as handles, by which to carry the press about. The machine is to be generally used, as represented, with'a side piece, A, and clampinglevers F, also a gage, L, each side of the middle piece, A, to make long bundles of stalks laid with tops in the middle and butts at both ends and to be tied with two bands but in practice it may sometimes be preferred to lay the stalks in shorter bundles, all the tops being at one end and all the butts at the other and to be bound with a single tie. In that case one side A, together with its levers, will be detached, also one gage L, these parts being detachably connected for that-purpose.

The arms Q are employed in connection with middle part, A, to hold thebundle while being laid in the press, when only one of the sides having levers is employed. The said arms are also useful when both of the lever sides are employed, and will not be detached, although not then needed as much as inthe other case, and may be dispensed with, if desired.

Should the press be used for sorgo or other heavy material, the levers will be so pivoted on one side as to fold out and downward, to facilitate the removal of bundles when tied.

Having thus described myinventiomI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t-- 1. -The combination, in a press, of the two notched side pieces, A, arranged and supported as described, and a pairof crooked levers; F, pivoted to each of said side pieces relatively to said notches, substantially as described.

2. The combination, in a press, of anotched side piece, A, having a pair of levers, F, and similarly-notched piece A, having arms Q,'substantially as described.

'3. The combination, in apress, of two side pieces, A, having levers F, and an intermediate piece, A, having arms Q, substantially as described. a

4. The combination of notched side pieces, A, levers F, ratchet-bars H, and catches I, substantially as specified.
