Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI S. TAYLOR, 0F LAMOILLE, ILLINOIS.
CLEVIS FOR ATTACHING WHIFFLETREES T0 VEHICLES.
Specication of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI S. TAYLOR, of Lamoille, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Clevis; and I hereby declare that the following specification, in connection with the accompanying drawings and references marked thereon, constitute a lucid, clear, and exact description of the construction and use of the same in referring to the said drawings.
Figure l, denotes a plan or top view when in use and connected to whifletrees. Fig. 2, an inverted plan or underside view. Fig. 3, an end elevation. Fig. 4, a section of whiffletree on line A, B, of Fig. 1. Fig. 5, a section on line C, D, also of Fig. l.
[meantime- The nature of my invention consists in the clevis for attaching such whitietrees to the plow beam or other object which is constructed with a cam catch, so that the pin after being placed therein and simply turned, the lower end by its T shape entering a transverse oblong slot in lower part of clevis, and the upper end will come between the cam and catch on upper part, which by the spring of the clevis itself, will efectually hold the pin to the clevis, and consequently the whiffletree to the plow beam all as will be hereafter seen.
@obstruction-To enable persons skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and carry out the same I will describe it as follows.
In order to connect this whitletree to the plow beam or other object, I construct a clevis, the main part of which is seen at J and which passes through the central ring B, and its pin seen at I, the upper portion of the clevis J, has a cam O, and catch formed on and of it as seen at H, consisting in raised projections around the pin hole, and so that it cannot be got in and secured, or out, without turning it in the direction the red arrow points in Fig. l. The pin I, near its end is necked down, and its very-end formed T shape so as to pass through slot K, in under part of clevis, then by turning pin 26,986, dated January 24, 1860.
I, this T Ypart will catch onto, and hold itself to the lower part by coming crosswise of slot K, while the topor thumb piece of pin I, will come in contact with cam O, and spring the two prongs of the clevis together until the top of pin I, is moved past the cam O, and between it and the catch H, when the spring of the clevis will itself cause its ends to recoil into position indicated at Figs. l and 2, 3 and 4, the T part being across the slot K, as seen at Figs. 2, and 4, which will efectually hold the pin I to the clevis.
Various modications may be made of the parts and their relation to each other, without changing the principle in the least. I4
consider the construction and arrangement shown in the drawings to be the most simple and effectual.
Usa-All that is necessary to do in putting my within described invention into use is to put the clevis J, in ring B, of the whiffletree and place the clevis upon the plow beam or other object Gr, and then put in the pin I, its top part or thumb piece at right angles from the position seen in the drawings and turn it in the direction shown by red arrow Eig. l, until it arrives past the cam O, and between it and catch H, at position indicated in the drawings, and to remove this pin I, continue the turning for one fourth a circle or until the thumb piece passes the catch H, when the pin I, is readily drawn out, its T shaped lower end passing through the slot K, formed in lower part of clevis. l
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- My within described clevis or its equivalent device, constructed substantially in the manner described, and for the purposes fully set forth.
LEVI 4S. TAYLOR.
Witnesses ENooH PRATT, T. JOHN TAYLOR.
