PAPER-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,177, dated January 23, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Ross WHITE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a box or holder for thin paper in small sheetssuch as water-closet paper-from which the paper can be removed conveniently, but only in small quantities, so as to prevent waste and litter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

The hoxAis made of any suitable material, and of a size for conveniently containing an ordinary package of water-closet paper. At one side the box is provided with a slit or opening, B, which is made of a width to allow insertion of a persons thumb and forefinger, and ofa length to allow separation of the fingers. The inserted package of paper is represented at G, and the wire a, by which the sheets of paper are held together, passes through an eyelet or hole, I), at the upper end of the box, so as to serve for suspension of the box and paper, and at the same time preventing the paper from dropping or sinking down in the box. The paper is to be put in the box and the ends of the box then scaled up, so that the opening B furnishes the only means of access to the paper. This hole being of limited size, the paper can be removed only by pinching a sheet or two between the fingers, and thus waste of the paper and the littering which always occurs with the usual methods or devices provided for the purpose are prevented. The opening may be of any suitable shape and placed in any part of the box, and it will be understood that the box or holder may form the package in which the paper is sold.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A front-slotted paper-holder-having at its back, near the upper end, a hole, b, and a Wire passing through the sheets of paper, back over them, through the hole, and at the outer end formed into a loop, substantially as shown and described.
