2 Claims. (Cl. 150-28) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in handbags for women and children.

More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved handbag which will have a decorative buffer edge flange to protect the handbag and on which the handbag can be rested.

As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the handbag with a peripheral member of flexible material which can be secured to'the side wall and with a flexible marginal binding strip which will secure the handbag components together in a simple and eflicient manner.

Still further, the present invention proposes forming the side wall peripheral member with a free edge portion having an internal air space arranged to give a rolled edge appearance and to provide a resilient cushion on which the bag can rest.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a handbag constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the handbag in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, is designated generally by the reference numeral 15.

Handbag is a box or pail-like container with a bottom end wall 16 made up of a stiffener panel 17 and two outer panels 18 and 19 on the stiffener panel 17. Handbag 15 also has a circular side wall 20, likewise made up of a stiffener panel 21 with an outer panel 22 and a top lid wall 24 of stiffly flexible material. Top lid wall 24 preferably is constructed the same as bottom end wall 16.

Top lid wall 24 has a hinge extension portion 28 extending down the outside of the circular side wall substantially the depth of the side wall 20 and secured to the side wall 20 by spaced rivets 29. This also secures the side edges 30 and 31 of side wall 20.

A flexible edging 32 extends around the top lid wall 24 secured by stitches 33. A similar edging 34 extends around the upper end edge 35 of the circular side wall 20. A handle strap 36 is secured to the top lid wall 24 and a flexible locking strap 37 has one end 38 secured to the circular side wall 20 by a rivet 39. The other end, 40', of the locking strap has a fastener element 41 for coacting with a like fastener element 42 on the top lid wall 24. When the fastener elements 41 and 42 are engaged, as in Fig. 1, the strap is folded on itself.

A side wall peripheral member 43, preferably a thermoplastic band, is secured to the circular side wall 20 by rivets 44. Member 43 has one edge portion 43' aligned with and adjacent and parallel to the periphery 45 of the bottom end wall 16. A flexible marginal binding strip 46, preferably of thermoplastic material, extends around the edge portion 43 of member 43 and the periphery 45 of bottom end wall 16 being secured by stitches 47. The ends 48 and 49 of the strip 46 are concealed beneath the hinge extension portion of the top lid wall. The marginal binding strip forms a bottom flange on the handbag extending around the bag and in substantially the same plane as the bottom end wall.

The modification of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 is characterized by the provision of a roll-shaped handbag 60 having a curved side wall 61, two end walls 62 and 63 and a top lid wall 64 pivotally secured to the side wall 61 as by rivets 65.

Side wall 61 has a stiffener panel 66 and two cover panels 67 and 68. End walls 62 and 63 are identically constructed, each having a stiffener panel 69 and two cover panels 70 and 71. Top lid wall 64 has a stiifener panel 72 and two cover panels 73 and 74.

A pair of side wall peripheral members 75 and 76 are identically constructed, preferably of thermoplastic material. Each member 75 and 76 has a free edge portion 77 disposed adjacent side wall 61 and one edge portion 78 disposed adjacent one of the end walls.

A pair of flexible marginal binding strips 79 and 80 are identically constructed, preferably of thermoplastic material, and each extends around one of the edges of one of the end walls and one of the edge portions of one of the side wall peripheral members and is secured by stitches 81 to the side wall peripheral member and the side wall and by stitches 82 to the side wall peripheral member and one of the end walls.

The free edge portion 77 of each member 75 and 76 has an internal air space 85 to provide a roll edge appearance and a bufler flange on the handbag.

A handle in the form of a strap 86 extends lengthwise of the bag with its ends riveted to the end walls 62 and 63.

It is to be understood that instead of rivets 44, machine stitching may be used.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patout is:

l. A handbag for women and children comprising a pail-like container having a bottom end wall, a circular side wall and a top lid wall of stiffly flexible material with a hinge extension portion extending down the outside of the circular side wall substantially the depth of the side wall and secured to the side wall, a side wall peripheral member secured to the side wall and having one edge portion aligned with and adjacent and parallel to the periphery of the bottom end wall, and a flexible marginal binding strip extending around said edge portion of the side wall peripheral member and the periphery of the bottom end wall and secured to said side wall peripheral member and the bottom end wall.
