Description

UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE..
THOMAS e. HAROLD, or BROOKLYN7 NEw YORK, ASSIGNOR To HIMSELE AND JAMES H. HAROLD, or SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVED NEEDLECASE.
Speciicaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 28,037, dated April 24, 18(20.
being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 2 is a plan of my improvement. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the cover, and Fig. 4 is a plan of the box itself when in an upright position. The other figures are separately referred to. y
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a case so as to deliver one or more needles or other articles at a time of the size required. To accomplish this purpose I form the box A with any required number of receptacles B, to place the needles in, and fit a cover, O, to the same, having a small hole, d, in its top, the size of which is a trifle larger than the needle in the receptacle B. It will now be seen that when the cover O is turned so as to make the hole d come opposite any one of the receptacles upon invertingthe case one needle will fall out ofthe hole d. I stamp numbers on the box A and an arrow on the cover C, so that when the said cover is turned and the arrow points to No. 2 on the box A, and the case inverted, a needle will drop out of size No. 2, and so on to any given number. It will be plainly seen that upon turning the cover to any particular number on the case the said needle will. drop out when the case is inverted. One portion of the case A is made blank, so that after the required needle is delivered from the case the cover can be turned so that the hole will come opposite the said blank portion and no needle can drop out ofthe hole. For convenienceI place a star or other device on box at this point.
Fig. 5 represents a plan of my improved needle-box, formed with a ratchet, e, on the same, the teeth of which determine when the cover is turned to a given receptacle. The cover, to iit a box of this description, has to have a reverse ratchet or a projection or spring to take the ratchet-teeth on the box, so that upon turning the said cover one tooth of the ratchet will make the hole in the same corre spond to a division in the box, the numbers on the box and the arrow still denoting the number of needle delivered.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the said case may be used for sewing-machine or hand needles, or other articles wherever available.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isM
I. A needle-case having a turning cover or its equivalent, with an opening for the delivery of a needle or needles from one of the receptacles of said case, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with said case and turning cover, the ratchet e and indicating-numbers around such case, for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 5th day of April, 1860.
THOS. GEO. HAROLD.
