Description

UNrrnn STATES PATENT Prion,
JOHN A. THOMAS, OF MONTFORT, WISCONSIN.
COMPOUND FOR HOG-CHOLERA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,161, dated July 10, 1883,
Application filed May 9, 1883. (X0 specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J onn A. THOMAS, of Montfort, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Compounds for the Treat ment of Hog Diseases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and canact description of the invention, which will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My discovery has relation to medical compounds adapted for the treatment of hog diseases, more especially the disease commonly known as hog-cholera, and it consists in the specific compound or composition of ingredients hereinafter more fully described and claimed. v
This compound is in the nature of a powder formed by finely pulverizing and mixing the following ingredients, to wit: one pound madder, one pound copperas, one pound sulphur, four ounces nitrate of potash, four ounces sulphuret of antimony, one-half pound charcoal, two ounces gent-ian-root, two ounces hyposulphite of soda, and two ounces arsenic.
This compound is administered in doses as follows: for cholera, one tea-spoonful morn: ing and evening for three days, then once a day, or every other day, for a week, the powder being mixed with ground feed, thick slops, or it may be administered simplymixed with a suitable quantity of salt and wood-ashes. For coughs, worms, or loss of appetite, give one or two full doses, then smaller doses every day or two for a week. I have found by experiment that if used two or three times a week it will act as an effectual preventive, and keep hogs in a thriving condition. Young shotes or pigs should have proportionately smaller doses.
I am aware that several of the ingredients used in my compound have been used before and in nearly the same proportions; but Iam not aware that all the ingredients hereinbefore named have been used in the same proportions by which I obtain parificular results; and
I therefore do claim as my invention and de sire to secure by Letters Patent 0f the United States- The hereinbefore described medical compound for the treatment of hog diseases, the same consisting of a finely-pulverized mixture of the following ingredients, viz: madder, copperas, sulphur, nitrate of potash, sulphuret of antimony, charcoal, gentian root, hyposulphite of soda, andarsenic, mixed in the proportion set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. THOMAS.
