Description
UNITED STATES PATENT rricna VILLIS G. MORRIS, OF COUXOIL BLUFFS, IOXVA.
H U B.
SPECFICATION formng part of Letters' Patent `1\l'o. 286,471, dated Octoher 9, 1888.
Application filed April 1.3, 1883. (Model.)
T0 all whom it ma'y concern: i
Be it known that I, XVILLIs G. MORE-Is, of Council Bluffs,in the county of Pottawattaniie, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inHuhs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof,` reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference inarkcd thereon, making part of this speoification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in huhs for vehicle-Wheels; and it has for 'its object the making of a combined Wooden and metallic huh with staggered spoke'soclrets, constructed and put together in such manner as to make a durahle andinexpensive structure, as will he imoie particularly hereiuafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, forining a part of this specification, Fignre 1 represents a plan view; Fig. 2, a 'longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a section of one of the spoke-soclo ets and portion of Wood hub.
In the drawings, E represents a wooden hub, constructed asusual, having a longitudinal opening, F, through it for the reception of the box, and having staggered mortises, as seen at d, to receive the tenons of the spokes.
A and B represent two Inet-allic hands, which are made, usually, of cast-iron,and which are' shrunk upon the exterior of the Wooden hub. W'ith and upon the inner portion of these hands are oast a series of sockets, which areintended to receive the inner endsof the spok es.
These hands, when fitted together as indicated by the liney y, show the spoke-sockeis in Zigzag or staggered position. i i
e e represent webs which connect the sockets. The sockets are cast three-sided, the
,d represents the mortise in the Wooden portion of the hub, for the purpose of receiving the tenon onV the inner end of the sppke. The Shoulders of the spoke have afirm bearing upon the shoulders left at the month of the inortise.
D D represent rivets or small bolts, which pass through alternate socket-s and Wehs and through the spohes placed ,in said sockets. c These rivets or holts not only serve to hold the spoke in place, but also bind the two hands together and prevent separation of the socket from the web. The casting in this case may he made malleahle, and consequently light and V comparatively yinexpensive.
Small Shoulders may he formed on the spokes to rest upon the periphery ofA the sockets, if desired.
, Having thus fully descrihed my invention,1 7c what I ola-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The Withindescrihed combined Wooden and inetallic hub, the metal parts consisting of two hands which have spoke sockcts cast upon them in such manner that When the two are put together they Will be in zigzag or staggered position, the Web of each hand hav ing recesses at m, as seen, and the hands and spokes held in position by holis or rivets, alternating, suhstantially as and' for the purpose 2. In a vehicle-Wheel, the combination, With the hub thereoflhavinga double series of staggered mortises, of the metallic hands, cast, respectively, with a oorresponding series of three-sided staggered larger recesses, the web between the recesses of each hand forming the fourth side of the adjacent recess, and the differenoe in size of the mortises and recesses forniing ahutinents for the Shoulders of the spokes, suhstzmtiallT as and for the purposes descrihed.p
In testiniony whereof I affix my signature,in presenoe of two witx1esses,this 24th day of J an uary, 1883.
