Description
Feb. 24, 1959 H. LIMA 7 PACKING OF PLATES AND THE LIKE BY MEANS OF A SLIP OF PASTEBOARD OR OTHER MATERIAL Filed Sept. 12, 1955 United States Patent "ice PACKING OF PLATES AND THE LKKE BY MEANS OF A SLIP 0F PASTEBOARD 0R OTHER MATERIAL Harald Lima, Austratt, Sandnes, Norway Application September 12, 1955, Serial No. 533,578
Claims priority, application Norway September 14, 1954!- 2 Claims. (Cl. 53-3) The present invention relates to a packing for plates and the like. The usual way to pack such objects is to put straw, wood-flock or paper between each plate until a pile including a proper number of plates is formed. The entire pile is then wrapped with paper in the usual way. It is very important that the packing be firm so that the plates have no opportunity of mutual displace ment.
The above-mentioned packing is encumbered with several inconveniences. Thus it is difiicult, if not impossible, to get such a packing sufiiciently firm. Moreover, without opening the packing it is impossible to see what it contains. This packing is also weak, and several such packings cannot be placed one on top of the other, which means that the packing demands large storage room. It is also an inconvenience that the above-mentioned packing demands careful work on the part of the operator.
The object of the present invention is to provide a packing for plates and the like, which avoids the abovementioned inconveniences, and which packing should be of very low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a method of packing plates.
With these and other objects in view, the packing according to the present invention consists of a slip of pasteboard or other material which when moistened shrinks by drying, or shrinks by other treatment, said slip being a little broader than theheight of a pile of plates to be packed, and preferably a little longer than the circumference of the plate-pile, the ends of said slip are then glued together so that the slip forms a tight ring around the plate-pile, the edges of said ring are then creased in beneath the bottom plate and over the top plate respectively in the pile so that the ring, after the shrink-treatment, tightly embraces the plate-pile.
The invention also consists in the method of packing plates in a pile by use of the slip of material and in the 2,874,521 Patented Feb. 24, 1959 construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter fully described. The invention will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein the single figure is a perspective view of a pile of plates held together by means of a slip of material according to the invention.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, numeral 1 inldicates the bottom of the lowest plate in the pile, and 2 indicates the top of the highest plate in the pile; 3 is a slip of pasteboard or other material which is moistened in advance. The ends of said slip 3 are secured or glued together for instance by means of paste-paper or adhesive tape 4 so that the slip forms a tight ring around the plate-pile. The lower edge 5 of the pasteboard ring 3 is creased in beneath the lowest plate 1 in the pile, and the upper edge 6 of the pasteboard-ring 3 is creased in over the plate 2 in the pile. As a result, more packings may be placed one on top of the other without weakening the packings. When the pasteboard-ring 3 dries, it shrinks and tightly embraces the plate-pile.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. A method of packing fragile plates into a neat pile comprising applying a slip of pasteboard capable of shrinking of a size that is a little broader than the height of the stack of plates and a little longer than the circumference of said stack of plates, securing the ends of said slip together to form a tight ring around the stack, creasing in the edge of said ring beneath the edges of the lowest plate and above the edge of the highest plate of the stack, and effecting shrinkage of the slip by applying the slip in a wet state, so that when the slip dries it will shrink to tightly embrace the stack of plates.
2. A package comprising a plurality of fragile plates, dishes, or the like, a protective band or slip of pasteboard surrounding the pile of plates, said slip being a little broader than the plate-pile to be packed is high, and a little longer than the circumference of the platepile, the ends of said slip being secured together so that the slip forms a tight ring around the plate-pile, the edges of said ring being creased-in respectively beneath the lowest and over the highest plate in the pile, and said slip having been applied to the plate-pile in a wet state and having shrunk during drying to tightly embrace the plate-pile to prevent any movement between said plates.
