Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIE CHARLES A. BOYNTOLT, OF HYDE PARK, VERMONT.
BUTTER-WORKER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,135, dated July 17, 18-60.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. A. BOYNTON, of Hyde Park, in the county of Lamoille and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful h lachine for Packing Butter into Buckets or Tubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view of the machine, showing the several parts forming the same and their relative arrangement.
This invention has for its object the pressing and packing of butter into tubs pails or buckets, or any vessel it may be found desirable to put it in, by suitable machinery whereby the butter may be pressed into a very solid and compact state with great facility and with little expenditure of labor.
To these ends my invention consists in the combination of an adjustable clamp for holding the pails with a horizontal disk spur wheel and a pinion level spur wheel and crank for giving to the tub, or disk wheel, a rotary motion, and in arranging over this disk wheel in a suitable manner, as will be hereinafter described, a conical pressing or packing roller that is made to act upon the top of the but-ter when put into the tub, by a hand lever so as to forcibly pack the butter down in the tub, and if necessary print or stamp the surface of the butter in the tub at one and the same operation of pressmg.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention .I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings A represents a base that is supported on four legs and made circular for appearance merely, in the center of which is set the shaft of a horizontal faced spur wheel, or disk 13, that is capable of rotating freely on the base A. This disk, B, is swelled up in its center and diametrically through this swelled portion passes a clamping and holding plate D that is attracted to the disk by a dove-tail slot so that this plate, D, is capable of moving about horizontally but not perpendicularly on the disk. Suitable provision is made in this plate D for clamping the tub C to it as shown in the drawings.
The horizontal wheel carrying the tub is rotated by a bevel pinion wheel E the teeth of which engages with those on this disk. The pinion E is turned with the hand crank F the shaft of which has its bearings in the upright post G.
G, G G are three uprights that are framed into the base A and connected together by a semi-circular brace II. The posts G, G serve to hold the transverse vibrating bar J, which is tenoned into the post G, and pivoted at this end, and at the other end it is only tenoned into a deep mortise into the post G so that it may have a slight end play and a vibrating movement. This bar J carries under it a conical roller K that is hung from the bracket arms 0 0 so as to rotate easily. The bar J is operated by a hand lever L, that is pivoted to post G and also pivoted to the bar J. This comprises the several parts forming my im proved butter packing machine the operation of which I will describe as follows: The tub into which the butter is to be packed is clamped to the disk wheel K by the movable clamping plate I). The butter is now put into the tub loosely and the tub set in motion. lVhile the tub is rotated, by turning the crank F with one hand, with the other hand and by means of the lever L, the conical pressing roller K is made to act. upon the butter in the tub and press it down firmly and uniformly in the tub. To imprint the surface of the butter when the tub is filled it is only necessary that the conical roller have on its surface the desired print.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Attaching a tub, to receive the butter, to a rotary disk 13 in combination with the conical pressing roller K arranged and operated substantially as described and to obtain the within described results.
