Description

HAIR CUTTING ACCESSORY Filed Oct. 7, 1957 Fl 26 III 27 INVENT OR.
MILDRED J. MC DONOUGH TORN E Y HAIR CU'ITING ACCESSORY Mildred J. McDonough, Milton, Mass. Application October 7, 1957, Serial No. 688,676 1 Claim. (Cl. 132-45) This invention relates to hair cutting accessories and more particularly to one for the trimming of bangs.
A primary object of my invention is to provide a device for guiding the cutting of bangs which will also act as a trough to catch the falling hair.
A further object is to provide a single device which is longitudinally self-adjusting in size and shape, to fit any head large or small.
This invention is transversely adjustable to the features of the wearer, adult or child, and provides a safety measure against the unexpected movement of the head of a child during the cutting operation. Further, it is sanitary, practically indestructable, easy to manufacture, transport and store.
Further objects and a fuller understanding of the invention will hereinafter appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment illustrative of the invention and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows an imprinted and perforated sheet from which the device is made and the resilient means used in assembly.
Fig. 2 shows the sheet with ends doubled over with associated perforations in register.
Fig. 3 shows the device assembled with ends doubled over, held in position by the terminations of resilient means and with the bottom edge turned up.
The device is fashioned from a sheet of flexible substantially transparent material, such as a plastic of which there are a wide variety available including particularly those based on vinyl-type polymers. The blank is formed with a straight top edge, depending side edges and a convexly arcuate bottom edge. Adjacent each end a pair of registrable perforations are spaced from each other and positioned on lines running outwardly and obliquely from said top edge toward said bottom edge. The blank is imprinted with a centering guide line and a plurality of cutting guide lines or other specifically designed guide lines. Resilient means are provided which cooperate with the perforations so as to engage the back of the head and hold the device inposition on the forehead of the wearer.
Referring to the drawings, the device therein shown as illustrative of one embodiment of my invention comprises a symmetrical flat, flexible, substantially transparent plastic sheet greater in length than in width having a top edge 11 and side edges 13 and 14 substantially perpendicular to the top edge 11, a convexly arcuate bottom edge 12 extending between side edges 13 and 14. Adjacent end 13 there area pair of perforations 16 and 17. The perforation 16 is substantially the same distance from top edge 11 as perforation 17 is from side edge 13, and substantially the same distance from side edge 13 as perforation 17 is from top edge v11. Adjacent end 14 there are a pair of perforations 18 and 19. The perforation 18 is substantially the same dis tance from top edge 11 as perforation 19 is from side edge 14, and substantially the same distance from side edge 14 as perforation 19 is from top edge 11. The sheet 7 2,936,767 Patented May 17, 1960 ice 10 has a front surface 20 and rear surface 21. The .bottom corners are adapted to be obliquely and exteriorly folded up or may be doubled over so that perforation 17 registers, with perforation 16 and perforation 19 registers with perforation 18; One end 24 of elastic means 23 is threaded through the aligned perforations 16 and 17, doubled back as at 22, and knotted as at 25. The other end 26 of the elastic means 23 is threaded through the aligned perforations 18 and 19, doubled back as at 22, and
knotted as at 27. The sheet 10 is imprinted with a transverse centering guide line 15 extending from the center of bottom edge 12 to the center of top edge 11 and is perpendicular to 11. A plurality of longitudinal parallel, arcuate cutting guide lines such as 28, 29, 30, and 31 are imprinted on the front surface 20 of the sheet 10, said lines being bisected by said centering line. Additional lines may be drawn on the front surface with wax crayon or other means to provide guide lines for specially designed bang contours.
The device is assembled with the end of edge 12, adjacent to edge 13, doubled back over the front surface 20 so that perforation 17 registers with perforation 16 and end 24 of elastic 23 is threaded through said perforations and knotted or otherwise terminated as at 25. Likewise the other end of edge 12 adjacent to edge 14 is doubled back over the front surface 20 so that perforation 19 registers with perforation 18 and end 26 of elastic 23 is threaded through said perforations and knotted or otherwise terminated as at 27.
The side edges 13 and 14 of each of the ends when thus exteriorly doubled over are in substantial registration with said top edge 11 and held in position by terminations of said resilient means.
In operation the device is mounted on the forehead of the wearer with rear surface 21 against the forehead and under the bangs to be cut, the elastic 23 is placed around the back of the head, the edge 11 is positioned adjacent to the hair line on the forehead, the lower end of the centering line 15 is placed on the center line of the nose, while the bangs to be cut overhang and are contiguous to the front surface 20. Being transparent it is more readily placed in position. Being made of flexible material the device conforms to the contour of any forehead both longitudinally and transversely. As a result of these curvatures, the bottom edge when turned up forms a trough of varying depth.
With the device thus located, the bottom edge 12 is turned up in varying amounts depending on the features of the wearer where it remains in position as a trough due to the novel arrangement of the doubled back ends and said double curvatures of the sheet. The trough extends from end to end in order to catch the falling hair.
Using any one of the imprinted guide lines, the bangs may be easily, smoothly and safely cut.
While the preferred embodiment of my invention has been described in detail, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction set forth, since various changes in the form, material and proportions may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or destroying any of the advantages contained in the same, heretofore described and defined in the following claim.
I claim:
A hair cutting accessory formed from a single blank and comprising a flexible substantially transparent sheet greater in length than in width having a top edge, two side edges depending from said top edge, a convexly arcuate bottom edge extending between said side edges, a similar pair of spaced perforations adjacent each of side edges positioned on lines running outwardly and obliquely from said top edge towards said bottom edge, each of said side edges being exteriorly doubled over so that each pair of said perforations register, said doubled over ends and said arcuate edge forming an adjustable continuous trough when said edge is exteriorly turned up, resilient means extending through each pair of aligned perforations to removably position said accessory, said resilient means having terminations adjacent said perforations, said sheet being imprinted with guide lines, said flexible device With continuous trough conforming to the contour of the forehead of the wearer both longitudinally and transversely.
