S. L. BLIGH.
HARNESS. No. 294,005. Patented Feb. 26, 1884 mess es: I 71126112024 Baa 8 p I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
sAMUnL L. BLIGH, or CUSTARDS, PENNSYLVANIA.
HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part .of Letters Patent No. 294,005, dated February 26, 1884.
Application filed July 7, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom, it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. BLIGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gus tards, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to harness; and it has for its object to provide means whereby the check-rein may be connected with or detached from the check-hook without descending from the vehicle, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully shown and specified.
The drawing hereto annexed illustrates as much of a harness as is necessary to exhibit my invention, the same being shown in perspective and in position upon a horse.
I designates the harness-saddle; G, the checkhook; H, the crupper-strap, and A the checkrem.
P designates a flat plate, at the front end of which is formed a hook, B, upon which the check-rein is hooked. Connected to the under side of the said plate, by means of a staple, S, is a loose ring, 0, adapted to engage the checkbook.
F is the operating-strap, which is attached to the plate P, at the rear end of the latter.
E is a rubber or other elastic strap, which is attached by its ends to the crup'per-strap, as shown. Upon the said strap is placed a loose guide-ring, D, through which passes the operating-strap F, the rear end of which may be attached to the reins, to the dash-board, or at any suitable place where it may be conveniently reached and manipulated by the driver.
the strap F is pulled until the ring 0 is drawn off the check-hook. It is then drawn slightly to one side and released, thus throwing the ring off the hook.
This device is'simple, convenient, and easily attached to ordinary harness. It enables the driver to check or uncheck his horse at any time, and without descending from his vehicle.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The combination of the harness-saddle I, having check-hook G, the crupper-strap H, having elastic strap E, the guide-ring D, placed loosely upon the said strap, the plate P, having hook B, adapted to receive the check-rein, and provided on its under side with a staple having a ring, 0, adapted to engage the checkhook, and the operating-strap F, attached to the rear end of the plate P and passing through the guide-ring D, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
SAMUEL L. BLIGH.
