LUBRIGATOR.

l y UNirnn STATES NPn'rrniwr Ormea'.
PETER JhBALTES, "OF OSIVEGO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR- OF ONE-HALF IO` JAMES B. DONNELLY, OF SAME PLACE.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,474, dated March 18, 1884. Application filed January 9, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern..- Be it known that I, PETER J. BALrEs, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, y in the State `of New York, have invented new and useful l of the rod or pitman.
'Ihe invention consists in certain peculiarities in the detail construction of the lubricator and certain devices connected therewith, as
` hereinafter more fully described, and specically set forth in the claims.`
In the annexed drawings, Figure I yis a vertical section of my improved lubricator, and Fig. II is atop view of the same.
` Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
C denotes the lubricant-cup, having a base, B, provided on its under side with a 4screwthreaded boss, d, by which it is screwed into a socket in the rod or pitman to be lubricated, a lubricant-duct, a, being extended through the base B and the boss, as illustrated in Fig. I ofthe drawings. The upper end of said duct is provided with a valve-seat, a', on which is seated a gravitating valve, o.
In order to admit of introducing the valve into the cup, and to obtain convenient access to thevalve-seat for grinding and repairing the same, I make the cup G detachable from the base B, by providing the latter with an up- Ward-projecting screw-threaded boss, d', and
forming the cup with a bottom having a screwthreaded orifice, e, into which the boss d is screwed. The valve o is guided by a stem, c, rising from said valve and passing through a channel in a guide, b,which is sustained inthe cup by radial arms extended therefrom and rigidly attached to orintegral with the wall of the cup.
To facilitate the repairs of the valve, I provide the upper end of the valve-stem c with a transverse slot, s, for the application of a screwdriver, by which to turn and grind the valve in and to itsseat, and in order to obtain ready access to the said valve-stem, I make the cap or entire top A removable by providing it with an `overhanging downward projecting flange, f, which is screw-threaded and screws onto the exterior of the end of the cylinder or body of the cup, the edge of the cover being milled,as illustrated in Fig. II ofthe drawings," to facilitate the manipulation thereof'.
To prevent the cover Afrom working loose from the cup, I provide the edge of the former with a notch, u, and attach to the exterior of the cup alatch, Z, held automatically in engagement with the notch, and yielding sufficiently to allow it to be forced out of the notch when desired to remove the cover A. vertically through the aforesaid cover works a screw, fr, which is directly over the end ofthe valve-stem c. By a suitable knob on the outer end of the said screw the same can be turned so as to enter the cup to a greater or less depth, the distance between the lower end of the screw r and upper end of the valve-stem c controlling the lift of the valve o, and consequently the egress of the lubricant from the cup O.
D represents a stationary graduated dial arranged concentricwith the aforesaid regulating-screw r on the top of the coverA, and p isa pointer lixed to the screw r, or'to its knob, and having its free end over the aforesaid dial, to indicate thereon the degree of movement of the regulating-screw fr, and consequently the amount of play allowed to the valve-stem and valve, which play controls the iiow of the lubricant from the cup to the parts to be lubricated.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination ofthe base B, provided with the screw-threaded bosses d d, and with the channel a and valve-seat afin the same, the cup C, provided with the screw-threaded orice c in its bottom, and the guide b above the bottom, and the valve o, having the stem c, sliding inthe said guide, substantially as specified and shown.
2. The combination, with the lubricant-cup, of a cap screwed onto the top thereof, and having an overhanging flange provided with a IOO notch, and a latch connected to the exterior of' In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed ro the cup and adaptedto engage said notch, Submy name and affixed my seal, in the presence stantially as described and shown. of two attesting Witnesses, at Syracuse, in the 3. In combination with the cup C, valve 0, county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, provided with the stem c, and the regulatingthis 21st day of December, 1883.
Screw fr, the dial D, arranged on top of the cup Y PETER J. BALTES. [L S.] concentric With'the regulatngscrew, and the VVitnessesz' pointer p, fixed to said screw, substantially as C. H. DUELL, described and shown, for the purpose set forth. F. H. GIBBS.
