UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT ENGLISH, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,977, dated May 6, 1884.
Application filed January 30, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT ENGLISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful ()iLO-an, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in oil cans or fillers, and more particularly to that class which are employed to distribute the oil upon machinery; and it has for its ob ject to provide a can of improved construction, whereby the liability of foreign matter in the oil will be prevented from cloggingtheescape-tube, and thus rendering the flow of oil impossible until the spout of the same has been freed from such obstruction.
With these ends in View the invention con sists in the combination, with the spout of an oil-can, of a perforated tube connected to the end thereof.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of an oil-can having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the spout detached, showing the application of my improvement to the same.
In the accompanyingdrawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several figures, A represents an oil-can, which is of the ordinary construction, and provided with the usual screwthreaded mouth or opening, a.
B represents the spout, which is provided nearits lower end,-and upon the portion situated within the can A, with a series of openings, and at its lower end with a plug, (1.
Upon the tube or spout Bis a screw-cap, b,
. which is adapted to engage with the interiorlyscrew-threaded mouth of the can. As the tube B is tapering, the cap I) is slidthereon, and forced downwardly upon the enlarged portion of the same, thus securely wedging the cap upon the spout. The lower or under side ofthe screw-threaded cap is closed tightly around the tube 0, so that the only communication that the oil could have would be by passing first through said tube 0, which strains the oil and prevents any foreign matter from entering the oil-tube and interfering with the proper flowof oil when in use. The lower end of this tube 0 is closed by means of a stopper, d, which fits tightly Within the said tube.
It will be seen from the above description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, that my improvement is very simple, is readily applied, and thoroughly prevents any foreign matter from entering the' oil tube; and, further, that it may be manufactured and supplied ata slight cost. It will also, be seen that my improvement may be applied to cans containing kerosene, 8m.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the can A, having a screw-threaded opening, of a spout provided upon its sides within the can A with aseries of openings, and provided at its lower end with a plug, d, and an exteriorly-screw-threaded cap rigidly mounted on said spout, and adapted to engage the screw-threaded mouth ofthe can A, substantially as set forth. In testimony that ,I claim the foregoing as .my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
