Filed Jan. 27, 1959, Ser. No. 789,316
3 Claims. (Cl. 211-96) This invention relates to an improved domestic hanger especially for use in the kitchen for supporting dishcloths, towels, pads and various other articles, and has for one of its important objects to provide a device of this character which may be readily mounted for use either on a vertical support such as a wall or a horizontal support such, for example, as beneath the bottom of an elevated kitchen wall cabinet.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a kitchen hanger of the character described which is swingable in a horizontal plane to various positions for convenient use.
Other objects of this invention are to provide a kitchen hanger of the character set forth which will be of relatively simple construction, compact, durable, of light weight and which may be produced at reasonable cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view, with portions broken away, of an improved kitchen hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section through the device, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view, partially in section, showing the position of the bracket for mounting the device beneath the bottom of a wall cabinet or other suitable horizontal support.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 5 designates generally a mounting bracket of metal or other suitable material. The bracket 5 includes a substantially rectangular plate 6 of suitable dimensions, said plate comprising a right angularly extending marginal flange 7. The corner portions of the plate 6 are apertured to accommodate screws 8 for securing the bracket 5 in position on a suitable support such, for instance, as a wall 9. The plate 6 is longitudinally slotted, as at 10, for the passage of a pair of apertured, face-abutting ears L1. The ears 11 include right angularly bent, oppositely extending inner end portions 12 which are engaged with the back of the plate 6.
Removably mounted on the bracket 5 is an adapter 13. The adapter 13 comprises a metallic strap 14 which is bent or folded transversely on itself at an intermediate point and formed to provide a split tubular hearing or sleeve 27. It will be noted that the bearing or sleeve 27 is vertical. The strap 14 terminates in upwardly extending, outwardly offset free end portions 15 which straddle the ears 1-1 and which are apertured to accommodate a bolt 16 for removably securing said strap to said ears. The longitudinal edges 28 of the legs of the strap 14 bear on the plate 6 when the device is mounted on the wall or other vertical support 9 with the adapter 13 in the position of Figure 2 of the drawing on the bracket 5. When the adapter 13 is in the position of Figure 4 of the drawing, as when the device is installed beneath the bottom of a wall cabinet or other suitable horizontal support, the free ends 17 of the legs of the strap 14- bear on the plate 6. It will be observed that in both positions the adapter 13 is suspended from the ears 11.
An arm -18 is mounted for swinging movement in a horizontal plane on the bracket 5 through the medium of the adapter 13. Toward this end, the arm 18 is pro vided with a downturned inner portion 19 which terminates in a reduced end portion 20 which is journalled in the bearing or sleeve 27. The arm 18 further includes a relatively short, downturned outer portion 21 which terminates in a reduced end portion 22.
Mounted for rotation in a horizontal plane on the free or outer end of the arm 18 is a rack 23. The rack 23 comprises a hub 24 which is journalled on the end portion or spindle 22 of the arm 18. Article supporting fingers 25 radiate from the hub 24. The fingers 25 terminate in upwardly angled free end portions 26 for retaining the articles on said fingers. In use, the plate 6 is secured to a wall or other suitable vertical support through the medium of the screws 8. The adapter 13 with the arm 18 thereon, is then mounted on the ears 11 with the edge portions 28 of said adapter bearing against the plate 6. Thus, the arm '18 and the rack 23 are firmly supported in a horizontal position on the bracket plate 6 through the medium of a single bolt 16. To install the device beneath the bottom of a kitchen cabinet, for example, the plate 6 is positioned horizontally as shown in Figure 4 of the drawing and secured. The adapter 13 is then secured to the ears 1'1 with the ends .17 of said adapter in abutting engagement with said plate. In this manner the arm 18 and the rack 23 are again firmly supported in a horizontal position.
It is believed that the many advantages of a kitchen hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A kitchen hanger comprising: a bracket including a plate to be mounted on a support, an ear mounted on said plate, a substantially L-shaped, removable adapter suspended from said ear, a horizontal arm mounted on said adapter, and a rack mounted on the arm, said adapter including relatively angularly extending portions to be selectively abutted with the plate for supporting the arm in a horizontal position.
2. A kitchen hanger comprising: a bracket including a plate to be mounted on a vertical or a horizontal support, an car on said plate, a substantially L-shaped, removable adapter having one end portion detachably secured to said ear and depending therefrom, an arm mounted for horizontal swinging movement on the other end portion of said adapter, and a rack rotatably mounted on the arm, said adapter including portions selectively engageable with the plate for supporting the arm in a horizontal position when said plate is mounted on a vertical or a horizontal support.
3. A kitchen hanger comprising: a bracket including a plate to be mounted on a support, said plate having a slot therein, a pair of apertured ears mounted in the slot and projecting forwardly from the plate, said ears including angularly bent, oppositely extending end portions engaged between the plate and the support, a substantially L-shaped adapter removabl y mounted on the bracket, said adapter comprising a pair of opposed legs straddling the ears and secured thereto and depending therefrom, s-aid adapter further comprising a vertical bearing at an intermediate point, a horizontally swingable arm having one end portion journalled in the bearing, and a horizontal pack rotatably mounted on the other end portion of said arm.
