To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JosEPH F. LANGLAIS, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use-- ful Improvement in Trestles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings,in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my portable, adjustable, or knockdown trestle. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the upper end of legs. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of a section of horizontal top rail; Fig. 5, an enlarged View showing manner of connecting bottom rail; Fig. 6, a perspective view of fastening an end cross-piece. Fig. 7 is aside View, partly in section, of brace and connecting-plate.

The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable trestle for mechanics or others that is simple in construction, and which can easily be taken apart, if desired, in transporting from one place to another, or to stow away in a small space when not in use.

A A are legs or supports of sufficient size and length, with their lower ends a conven ient distance apart and the upper ends beveled, so as to fit together. A vertical recess. 0, is cut into the inner edge at the top to re ceive the horizontal top piece, I. Within the recess 0 is a vertical triangular recess, 0, the same length as the recess 0. On the inner side of the legs A A, and near the lower end, are recesses D. Over the lower edge of the recess D an iron plate, E, is securely fixed, A horizontal cross-piece, F, has on each end, at the lower side, a plate, G, securely fixed, with its outer end turned down slightly, so that when the hooks of the straps G are placed in the sockets D and the upper ends of the legs A are secured together the plates E will prevent the legs from spreading, and at the same time securely hold the said cross-piece F and give rigidity to the truss. Around the upperend of the legs A A a retaining-band, H, is placed, formed of half-oval iron, to hold the upper ends of the supports in position. Two of these upright end pieces or supports are designed to be used for each truss, placed a suitable distance apart.

The horizontal top piece, I, of suitable distance, has on each of its vertical sides, and near the ends, triangular or V-shaped pieces J, firmly secured to the piece I by means of bolts or screws. When the trestle is put together, the triangular pieces J fit into the re cesses'O, so that the horizontal piece I and the legs A are held together.

On the lower side of the piece I, midway bctween the ends, a plate, K, is placed. The sides of the plate are provided with ears K. A transverse bolt passes through and extends between these ears. A brace, K, provided at its upper end with ahook, is placed at each end of the trestle, with the upper ends hooking into the plate K. The'lower ends of the braces may be supplied with slots, and have hooks fastened to the sides of the brace above the slots, so that the hooks will work over the slots. Staples are driven into or fastened securely on the inner sides of the legs A,over which the slots in the brace are passed and held in position by means of the hooks.

L represents one of the lugs, placed midway between the ends of the cross-piece F, on the inner side, and securely fastened thereto. A horizontal piece, M, extends between the legs, each end of said piece being provided with strap-iron loops N, securely fastened thereto.

When it is desired to make use of the trestle, the ends of the cross-piece F are placed in the recesses D and the upper ends of the legs are drawn together and the band H placed over them, when they are held in place by screws or in any other suitable manner. The horizontal piece I is then placed in the recesses O. The lower piece, M, is looped over the lugs L, after which the braces Kare attached, and the trestle is ready for use.

\Vhat I claim as new is- 1. In a trestle, the legs A, mitered at the upper ends and provided with the recesses O O, and having near their lower endsthe sockets D and overhanging plate E, in combination with the horizontal piece I, having the triangular-shaped cleats J, and with the crosspiece F, having the hooked plate G and the band H, substantially as herein set forth.
