SHIELD .AND BLOTTER. No. 310,257. Patented Jan. 6, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILES It. B. COVVAN, OF VINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESN E ASSIGNMENTS, OF TWO-THIBDS TO HENRY IV. BOOTH, OF SAME PLAGE, AND FRANK H. LEAVENWORTH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,257, dated January 6, 1885.
Application tiled July 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: l
Beit known that I, MILES R. B. Cowan, of
Vindsor, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shields and Blotters;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certainnew and useful improvements in the construction of shields and blotting-pads, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Figure l is a view of my improved shield pad detached and Fig. 2 shows the same attached to the hand of the wearer, in such manner as to be presented between the palm of his hand and the paper upon which he is writing.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a bed formed of as many pieces or thicknesses of blotting-paper as may be desired, cut substantially in the form shown, so that the broader portion will entirely prevent the palm of the hand from contact with the paper upon which the writing is being made, while secured to the narrow portion is a flexible band, B, adapted to attach such pad to the wrist ofthe wearer. The various thicknesses of the pad, the sheets being all coincident in size and shape, need not be secured together in any other way than by means of the eyelet a, or other fastening employed to secure the strap to them.
In writing with this pad upon the Wrist the exposed sheet of blotter is employed for blotting the manuscript until its absorbent qualities are apparently exhausted, when it may be torn off andthe next one in succession brought into operation.
O represents a piece of kid, leather, or other suitable material coincident in size and shape with the blottingpads, secured to the Iiexible strap by the same device which secures the strap to the blottingpads, which is placed so that when the whole device is attached to the wrist this piece O rests against the hand and prevents the perspiration thereof from defacnot claim, broadly, a combined blotting-pad and hand-rest, but limit myself to the exact construction shown, which construction I deem a decided improvement over those heretofore used.
I attach importance to the shape of the pad A, which, it will be seen, is pear-shaped, or substantially so, which affords protection for the hand and fingers, as well. as for the wrist, and by having the securingstrap fastened at one end, instead of at the center, as has been the custom, the device will protect the paper from the whole hand and still allow the strap C to encircle the wrist at a point where it will not contract the muscles and cramp the hand.
This blotter is simple,inexpensive, and durable, and the various parts may each and all be readily replaced by new ones when they are worn out, one eyelet serving to secure all the parts together.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. A combined hand-rest and blotter consisting of a pad having an expanded portion conforming to the shape of the hand, and a contracted portion conforming to the shape of the wrist, in combination with an elastic strap attached to said contracted portion to secure thepad to the wrist of the penman, and allow the expanded portion to extend forward and form a rest for the penmans ngers, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the blotting-pad A, shield C, covering said pad on one side, elastic strap B, and the eyelet c, said eyelet securing the various parts together, substantially as herein shown and described.
MILES B. B. COWAN.
