J. J. YHOPPES,
TOBACCO CUTTER.
No. 310,431. Patented Jam-6. 1885.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\m I y i l 3 W Ifivantor 620 1 may UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. HOPPES, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO lVARRE-N A. ROSS, OF SAME PLACE.
TOBACCO-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,431, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed May22,1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. HOPPES, of Springfield, county of Clark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Gutters, of which the-following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the specification, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved tobaccocutter. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section taken on line w m, Fig. l, the dotted line 11 y indicating the line upon which Fig. 1 is taken; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the knife detached. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of cutters for plug-tobacco in which the knife is hung at thelower ends of two parallel arms or pivoted links; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the bed of the cutter, upon which are secured two pairs of uprights, B, two of which are removed in the vertical sectional view, Fig. 1, and the upper ends of these uprights are perforated for the passage of the bolts 0, upon which the upper transversely-prrforated end pieces, D, of the parallel links E are pivoted. These links or arms have transverse pins F at their lower ends, upon which the knife G is pivoted, and the upper perforated end pieces, D, of the links have recesses H at one end, in which are placed spiral springs I, wrapped around the pivotal bolts (J and secured at one end in the bottoms of the said recesses, and at the other end to the sides of the uprights 13, serving to swing the parallel links to one side. One of the links has a handlever, J, secured to it at an angle, the lever being either integral with the link or rigidly secured to it, and serving to swing the links downward toward their vertical position when depressed.
The knife G consists of the cutting-blade K,
' which has its lower edge straight and sharp ened, and the frame or back L, which is provided at one end with a knob or handle, M, and at its upper edge with two hook-shaped bearings, N .N, pointing with their ends toward each other, the blade being secured to the side of the frame by bolts or rivets. The hook-shaped bearings are near the ends of the frame and are adapted to catch over the transverse pins F at the lower ends of the links, allowing the knife to swing with its lower edge in a horizontal position. It will be seen that the spring at the link which is not provided with the handle will force the pin of that link into its hook-shaped bearing, and by drawing laterally upon the knife draw the hook-shaped hearing at the other end of the knife to hold against the pin of theother link, the said pin being at the same time forced into the bearing by the weight of the hand-lever, and the knife may be removed for the purpose of sharpening it, or for any other purpose, by forcing one of the links inward, releasing it from its engagement with the hook-shaped bearing upon the knife, when the other hook-shaped bearing may be disengaged from the other link. It follows that the knife may be again inserted by reversing the manner of removing it.
The operation of cutting in this apparatus is similar to the operation of other cutters having the knife hung at the ends of parallel links or arms.
Hzwing thus described my invention, I make no claim fora tobacco-cutter having the knife hung at the lower ends of parallel swing: ing links; but
I claim- 1. The combination, with the parallel swinging links having means for operating them and provided with transverse pins at their lower ends, of a knife provided with hook-shaped bearings at its upper edge, the said bearings pointing toward each other, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination, in a tobacco-cutter, of the uprights arranged in pairs, the parallel arms or links pivoted at their upper ends between the upper ends of the uprights and having transverse pins at their lower ends, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set springs forcing the links to one shl'so handle in hand this 119th day of May, 1884-. attached at {in angle to one of the links, and a knife liming hook-shaped bearings at the ends of its upper edge, said bearings pointing i toward each other with their hook-shaped portions, as and on the pnrpese shown. and 1 set forth.
JOHN .T. HOPPES.
