WITNESSES i/Vl/E/VTOR JACOB M. KELLS, or ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
STEAM OSCILLATING VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,126, dated February 10, 1885.
Application filed July 19, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB M. KELLS, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Oscillating Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in steam oscillating valves, the object of the same being to provide a valve in which the pressure of the steam in the steam-chest shall be taken off the valve, the frictional wear being thereby reduced to a minimum, a further object being to provide a simple, convenient, and inexpensive valve adapted for use on locomotives and all ordinary engines.
WVith these ends in View my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the valve mounted, a portion of the casing being removed. Fig. 2 is a central section transverse to the axis of the valve, and Fig. 3 is a central section in the plane of the axis of'the valve at right angles to the base.
A represents a cylindrical casing rigidly secured on a suitable support, B. Through the flat face of the support B the steam-ports I) lead from the inside of the cylindrical cas ing A to the cylinder. Through the opposite ends of the casing A, between the axis of the valve D and the support B. steam-ports a are formed, leading to the inside of the casing.
The casing A is further provided with an exhaust-port, a. located about midway between the steam-ports b.
The valve proper consists of a hollow cylinder, D, adapted to fit within the cylindrical casing A, and provided with journals (1, adapted to rest in the boxes centrally located in the ends of the casing A.
The valve D is provided with steam and exhaust ports I) and 12 located in pairs, being about one-third of the circumference of the cylinder apart, as shown in the drawings, to correspond with the ports b in the casing B, with the exhaust-port cl, corresponding to the port a in the casing A, and with the steamports (1 corresponding with the ports a in the casing. A diaphragm, F, extends from between the steam and exhaust ports b and I)" to the center or ,axis of the valve D, thus separating the interior of the valve into two chambers, 00 and J.
The ports d and (Z are constructed of sufficient length to admit of the valve D being rotated the distance between the centers of one of the pairs 1) b without shutting off the entrance of the steam through the ports a, or the exhaust through a.
The valve is conveniently operated by means of a crank-arm, f, secured on the end of one of the journals (1.
From the above construction it will be observed that the pressure of the live steam within the chamber i is continuous, the same being admitted through the opposite ports, a,- that the slight: rocking of the valve by the valve-operating mechanism brings one of the ports I) over one of the ports I) and introduces live steam into the cylinder, and at the same time brings one of the ports b over the other port I), and thereby allows an exhaust into thechamber a and out through the ports (1' and a.
The important advantages of my invention are the slight movement of the valve required to open and close the ports and the constant pressure of the steam within the valve. which t'eatu res render. the friction extremely light and the valve consequently very durable and capable of being operated by slight power.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
In an oscillating valve, the combination, with a cylindrical valve box or casing having a steam-inlet port and an exhaust-port, and ports 1), connecting with a cylinder, of a hollow cylindrical valve provided with a steaminlet port and an exhaust-port registering, respectively, with, and of greater size than, the corresponding ports of the valve-box, and with the ports I) and b arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the diaphragm, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB M. KELLS.
