Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HARROUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monuments, of which the following is a specification.

My improvements are intended for application in the construction of monuments of all shapes and sizes. I

I make the outside or shell of my monuments of such clays and earths as can be given suitable form while in a moist and plastic state, and can afterward be hardened by heat. The clays and earths which I use for this purpose are those that are adapted to the manufac ture of earthenware, pottery, and porcelains,

and my mode of treating these materials for my use in the process of preparation and burning is substantially the same as that followed in making the before-mentioned wares. This external wall or shell is not of uniform thickness, but is required to be much thicker in some cases than in others, the thickness varying as more or less strength is demanded, or as a greater or less amount of space is wanted for the filling, hereinafter to be described, and in consequence of other things. This outside or shell is made in a single piece or in parts, and when made in parts they are of such sizes and forms as convenience of manufacturing or of handling may showto be best, or that may be shown to be best by other circumstances arising from any peculiarities of the monument in the construction of which they are to be used.

I glaze or enamel those parts of the shell that can be improved by so doing, and add or retain color to suit.

I make the inside or body of my monuments of any materials found suitable-such as common cements, asphaltum, plaster-ofparis, or whatever proves satisfactory in view of cost and fitness. The materials which I use for this body or filling are such as can be applied while in a comparatively soft and pliant state, and will afterwardbecome suffi ciently hard to give the stability and strength as well as the weight to the monument which are sought for in using them.

I shall now refer to the accompanying drawing for the purpose of setting forth my invention with greater plainness and more in detail. The left-hand parts of the drawing give a view in perspective of portions of the outside of a monument when finished. The

righthand parts give, mainly, a view of the interior.

The letter 3 refers to the shell or external wall of a monument, which has been previously described.

The irregular lines located in the righthand portions of the drawing represent the fillingor body of the monument, already alluded to, and the letter D refers to the same.

The letter 1' indicates the place where different sections or parts of the shell come in contact with each other.

The letter 1) refers to an upright shaft or standard in the interior of the monument. It is employed for the purpose of giving strength and stability to the monument, and its size and length are determined by the circumstances under which it is used. It can be made fast in the foundation'A, if necessary, and it may be constructed of wood or iron or any other suitable material.

The letter 0: refers to projections rising from i the inside of the shell and extending inward. Their shape is such that the filling by inclosing them and consolidating will hold them in place, and will thus hold in place the parts of the shell to which they are attached. Their size and length are varied to meet the different conditions under which they are used.

I inscribe my monuments with letters and figures in relief, or engraved, or in colors; and if inscriptions are to be added after the monument is otherwise completed, I provide for them by preparing some part of the shell to be out without injury to it; or I use tablets which are given the necessary inscriptions and are then placed upon the monument. The letter f refers to such tablets.

I do not claim a tablet for monumental inscriptions as my invention, except so far as it is used in connection with monuments described in this specification.

My invention does not relate to grave-covplace, those sections of the shell which re- 10 quire additional support being provided with internal flanged projections embedded in the ers, or to any manner of receptacle for bodies plastic material, substantially as described.
