To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, J OHN HENRY WILLIAMS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Texarkana, in the county of Miller and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam and Air Brakes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to steam and air brakes; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a locomotive-engine with some of its parts removed, showing my brake attached. Fig. 2 is a detail view.
My invention is described as follows: The brake-shoes a a are supported by rods 1) b, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the side rail, f, of the engine-frame, while the lower ends are pivoted to the brake shoes. The tightening-rods c c are pivoted to said brakeshoes at oneend, while the other end is pivoted to the lower end of the lifting'rod c. On the side rail, f, of the engine-frame is erected a fulcrum, 9. On this fulcrum is pivoted a lever, h. To the short arm of this lever h is pivoted the lifting-rod e. To the long arm of this lever h is pivoted the piston-rod i, bearing a knuckle-j oint, i. This piston-rod works through the guide j of the steam or air cylinder k. The cylinder is is attached to the side of the cab, and steam is conducted to the same by pipes leading from the steamchest, and is operated by levers and throttle-valves in the usual way; but, it may be attached to the engine in front of the driving-wheels, in which case it will be operated in the same manner as when attached to the side of the cab. The lever h has a flange or blade, h, running along its lower side its entire length. This blade is to give great strength to it under perpendicular pressure, and allows of its being sufficient- 1y strong without being too large. The steam or air enters at the upper end of the cylinder and presses the long end of thelever h downward. This draws the lifting-rod e upward and throws the brake-shoes (i av against the driving-wheels.
In order to give the lever h a quick and cert ain upward motion when the pressure of the steam or air is taken off the piston and quickly withdraw the brake-shoes a a from contact with the driving-wheels and hold them from such contact until the pressure is again applied, I use an S-spring, Z, the lower end of which is bolted to the'npper face of the rail f, and the upper end is bolted to the lower face of the lever h, at the extremity of its long arm.
The knucklejoint 'i is used in the pistonrod 1', so that the upper end of the said rod above the said joint may move perpendicularly up and down in the guide 3', while the part below the said knuckle-j oint will accommodate .itself to the slight circular motion caused by the up-and-down motion of the lever h.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a locomotive-engine having brakeshoes a a, rods b b, and tightening-rods 00, the combination therewith oflifting-rod 6, its lower end pivoted to the inner ends of the tightening-rods c c, and its upper end pivoted to the short arm of lever h, with lever h pivoted on fulcrum g, piston-rod i, pivoted to the long arm of saidlever, said rod '5 having knucklejoint z", the upper part of said rod working up and down through the guide j, and. attached to the piston, steam or air cylinder I, having the guide j, and S-spring Z, bolted to the upper face of rail f and the lower side of lever 11, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a locomotive steam or air brake having shoes to a, rods b b c c, and lifting-rod e, lever 71 having flange or blade h, having its short arm pivoted in the upper end of liftingrod 6, with fulcrum g, mounted on the upper face of the rail f and bearing the said lever h in its upper end, piston-rod i, pivoted to the long arm of the said lever hv and working through the lower head of a cylinder, k, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
3.
