MACHINE FOR BREAKING COAL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,451, dated February 19, 1861.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. P. GARNER, of Ashland, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Breaking Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in machinery for breaking coal, and has for its objects a machine which shall possess the capacity to more economically and perfectly break the coal, and which shall be more simple and durable in its construction than machines now in use, and to these ends my in vention consists in the employment of a ro tating face plate, hung in a vertical plane or nearly so and provided with projecting teeth, in combination with a toothed roll, or cylinder, or rack, hung loosely in bearings and arranged in front of the said rotating face plate, the whole constructed and oper' ating as hereinafter fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the mode in which I have practiced the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a top view of one of my improved coal breaking machines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4t is a partial vertical section of the face plate at the line y, y, Fig. 2, illustrating the construct-ion of the teeth (increased scale). Fig. 5 are cletached views in perspective of details to be referred to. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section at as, m, Fig. 3, (increasedscale) In the different views the same letter indicates the same parts of the machine.
A, is the table or frame of the machine which table is slotted out as seen at, S, (Fig. 1) to accommodate the toothed face plate, C, which is fastened on one end of a shaft D, said shaft, D, is hung and rotated in suitable boxes in stands, F, F, projecting up from the top of the table, A. The shaft, D, is provided with a pulley, E, to which power is applied by a belt from any suitable motor. B, is a hopper into which the coal to be broken is put, and from which it is fed, to the breakers.
H, is a cylinder, or roll provided with numerous teeth, 11, and having its journals Gr,
hung, in sliding or adjustable boxes, I, said boxes, I, being arranged and supported in slots in the sides of the hopper, B, as illustrated.
J, are set screws by which the boxes, I, (carrying the roll are adjusted and held at different positions relative to the face plate as will be presently explained. The cylinder, or roll, H, it will be seen is arranged in the lower :part of the hopper, B, (which latter is secured by bolts, a, to the table A) and with its axis about horizontal and parallel to the face of plate C. I have drawn the teeth, c,of the face plate, to prevent complexity, in the elevations as simple, projecting pins, but at Fig. 4 is illustrated the method of constructing and applying the said teeth which I use in the machine; the form of teeth, 0, is clearly shown at Figs. 4 and 5, but may be varied without departing from my invention in this part of the apparatus, which consists in inserting the teeth, V0, in the face plate, C, through slots, or mortises and securing them with wedge shaped keys, cl, and providing them with collars or washers, f and c, or otherwise arranging them, so that they can be readily removed (each one separately) for repair &c. or be set, or adjusted at different, projections from the face of the plate, C, to break the coal differently as may be desired.
It will be observed that the roll, H, is hung loosely in its boxes I, and is free to turn, or remain at rest, as it may be effected by the operation of the coal being broken between its teeth, 71, and the teeth, 0, of the rotating face plate, C, but I wish it to be understood that in lieu of the cylinder, H, toothed sector, or rack may be hung in the boxes, I, without materially affecting the operation of my invention. I have shown the cylinder with its axis extending from the outer edge, of periphery of plate, C, to within ashort distance of the centerof the latter, but the length of roll H, and width of hopper, B, may of course be varied to suit the constructor, or operator. I have shown in section at Fig. 6, one method of so arranging theroll H in its boxes I in the hopper and with set screws, J, as that the said roll can be moved along and held at difierent points, in a horizontal plane, in order that the face plate, ,0, shall run closer to, or farther from its periphery as circumstances may require, but it is evident that this as well as other details of construction in my machine may be varied without departing from my invention.
The general operation of the machine may be thus described: The hopper, B, being supplied with the lumps of coal, and a rotary motion of the proper speed imparted through pulley, E, and shaft, D, to the face plate, C, the latter revolves in proximity to the roll, H, and its teeth, c, in conjunction with teeth, 71, of roll, H, effectually break up the coal in a very economical and desirable manner. The operator can at pleasure adjust the roll, H, by means of the set screws, J, so as to break the coal in sizes to suit, and he can also adjust the teeth, 0, or any number of them, as he may deem expedient and can remove any of them readily for repair or sharpening. It may be remarked that in lieu of having the roll, H,
movable toward and from the face plate, 0, the latter may be instead, of the former adjustable, but I deem the method I have shown, best for carrying out my invention.
Having described the construction and operation of my improved machine for breaking coal, What I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- The combination of the toothed rotating face plate, C, and toothed cylinder, or roll, H, the whole constructed and operating as hereinbefore described for the purposes set forth.
