' UNITED STATES PATENT tries.
D; VID L. DURAND, OF DERBY, ASSIGNOR TO THE OSBORNE & CHEESlVIAN COMPANY, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
LAMP-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,919, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed November 15, 1.884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID L. DURAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, New Haven county, Conneoticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamp-burners, and the purpose thereof is to improve the construction and simplify the manufacture of the same by forming the base-plate or chimneyrest, the scrcw-neck,and the radial arms connecting them of one and the same piece of metal, the arms being provided with lips upon each side to hold the chimney-springs.
It is also the purpose of my invention to provide the burner with a perforated air-distributor which may be easily attached to or detached from it for the purpose of cleaning the parts.
The invention consists of the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed outin the claims annexed to this specification.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of a burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. l in the phi-new a; Fig. 2, asimilar view with the chimney-springs and air-distributor omitted. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the air-distributing plate detached. Fig. 4 is an edge view, partly in section, showing the manner of attaching the air-distributing plate.
In the said drawings, the'reference-numeral 1 denotes the basc'plate or chimney-ring,which is of the usual form, and the numeral 2- indicates the screwiecl ,connected with the chimney-rest by radial arms 3,having H1384 formed laterally upon each arm. These parts are all struck from the'same plate or piece of metal, and the radial arms 3 are provided with lips 4, struck out of the same piece, and havingsuch form that they may be bent over upon and firmly hold the chimney-supporting springs or arms 5, which have a shank, 6, inserted in an opening, 6, formed at the junction of said radial arms with the chimney-ring, as shown in Fig.2. These lips, being folded orbent over upon the superincumbent springshanks, 6,
hold the same firmly and securely in place.
The air-distributing plate 7 consists of a thin metallic disk thickly perforated with airopenings, as usual, and having such diameter that it may readily be inserted within the chimney-ring. Upon the periphery of said disk, at opposite points thereon, are formed lugs or points 8, which project beneath the chimney-holding ring, and are bent closely up against it, thereby holding the airplate 7 6o firmly in place, and at the same time permitting its ready removal for the purpose of cleaning the parts composing the burner. In striking out the chimney-ring with the screw-neck attached an opening, 6, is formed at the outer end of each radial arm 3, to admit the shanks of the chimney-springs.
By my invention the construction of the burner is greatly simplified and the cost of manufacture lessened. By making the airdistributing plate removable the burner may be easily and thoroughly cleansed.
Heretofore the screw-base of a burner has been formed with radial arms having lips at their edges, which are turned over upon the 7 5 ends of the chimney-springs to secure them in position. Such, therefore, I do not broadly claim.
WVhat I claim is 1. In a lamp-burner, the chimney-support 8o ing ring, the screw-neck, and the radial arms having lateral lips for holding the chimneysprings, said ring, screw-neck, arms, and lips all struck up integral from a single piece of metal, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2-. In a lamp-burner, the combination, with the chimney-ring, of the screw-neck connected thereto by radial arms having lateral lips, the whole struck from a single plate or piece of c metal, apertures being formed at the extremity of each radial arm, substantially as described.
3. In a lamp-burner, the combination, with the chimneyring 1 and the screw-neck 2, connected by radial arms 3, having lips 4, the 9 5 whole struck from a single piece of metal, of the chimney springs 5, having shanks 6,insorted in apertures 6, substantially as described.
4. In a lamp-Lerner, a removable airdis- ICC tributing plate having lugs projecting from In testimony whereof I affix iny signature in its periphery, by which it may be attached to presence of two witnesses. the burner, substantially as described.
T 5. In a lamp-burner, a removable air-dis- DAVID DURALD 5 tributing plate, 7, having lugs 8, adapted to Witnesses:
engage with the chimney-ring 0f the burner, JOHN E. LEWIS, substantiallyas described. 7 E. O. DREW.
