SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,304l, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed March 19, 1885. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OLDHAM, of Leipsic, in the county of Orange and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Implement for Molding and Necking Bullets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved implement for molding bullets and cutting off the necks at the same time that the molds are opened to eject the bullets.
The invention consists in a bullet-mold constructed of two levers, to one of which a jaw is pivoted, which, with the lever to which it is pivoted, forms the mold proper. A plate is secured on the top of one of the levers, and has an opening through which the lead is poured into the cavity for forming the bullet.
The invention also consists in various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Beferenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved bullet-mold closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line as as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same open on the line y Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line .2 2, Fig. 2.
A lever, D, having a handle, B, is provided with a recess or cavity, L, which extends from one side edge to the other. A plate, M, is held in the top of the lever D, and is provided with a funnel-shaped opening, M, into which the metal is to be poured, the plate M being held in place by screws 6 e. In the recess L a lever, E, is pivoted'by a pivot, G, at the inner end of the recess, and is provided with a handle, B. The lever E is provided with a lug, E adapted to strike against the shoulder D" of the lever D. The lever E has a beveled surface, A, and at the end of the beveled surface it is provided with a rounded part, H, which is forked, and in which a jaw, H, is pivoted by a pin, J, the inner edge of which jaw is straight and adapted to fit snugly against the beveled edge A of the lever E. Becesses N are formed in the beveled edge A and in the inner edge of the jaw H, and form the cavity for receiving the molten metal. The jaw H is provided at the inner end with a lug, H adapted to catch on a shoulder, L", on the lever D. A pin, stud, or nipple, cl, projects from the inner side of the lug or offset E? of the lever E, and a like pin, stud, or nipple, d, projects from the part H of the jaw H, the said pins, nipples, or studs passing into the ends of a spiral spring, K, which has a tendency to throw the jaw H in the direction of the arrow a.
L is a corner piece of the lever 1D. The handles B and B are provided with two inwardly-projecting stops, B, which come in contact when the handles are pressed together, as do also the ends of the said handles. A spring, 0, is passed through the lugs B, and has its ends a secured on the ends of the handle.
The operation is as follows: Ordinarily the mold is closed, the spring 0 pressing the ends of the handles from each other. The spring K presses the jaw H against the inclined edge A, and the molten metal can then be poured through the aperture M into the cavity for receiving the lead. By pressing the handles B B together the lever E is swung in the direction of the arrow 1) until the part H of the jaw H strikes the part or stop If on the lever D, thus causing the jaw H to swing in the inverse direction of the arrow a, whereby the spring K is compressed, the mold is opened, and the bullet drops out. By moving the end of the lever E in the direction of the arrow 1) the bullet is moved from under the aperture M, the mold still being closed, and by this movement the neck of the bullet, which neck is in the aperture M, is cut off. Then the mold is opened by the lug H and. the lug L, as described above. As soon as the handles are released they are thrown apart by the spring 0, and the mold is again closed, the spring K expanding and swinging the jaw H against the inclined edge A of the lever D. When the spring 0 has separated the handles, the lug E of the lever E strikes against the end D of the cavity L, and thus prevents the further separation of the levers. When the mold is closed, the cavity for receiving the lead is directly below the aperture M. When the mold is closed, the handles are pressed from each other, and the lug 11 1s pressed against the stop L, and thereby the inner edge of the jaw H is pressedagainst the bevel surface A.
Having thus fully described my invention, I 5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentr v 1. In a bullet-mold, the combination, with the lever D, having an opening or cavity at one end, of the lever E, pivoted inone end of the opening of the lever D, and the jaw H, pivoted in the opening of the lever D, in which jaw and in one edge of which lever the cavity for receiving the molten metal is formed, substantially as herein shown and described. 2. In a bullet-mold, the combination, with a lever having a cavity, of a lever pivoted at the inner end of the cavity and: provided with a pivoted jaw, and of a spring acting on the jaw and pressing the same against'the lever in which it is pivoted, said pivoted lever and jaw having mold-recesses, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In abullet-mold, the combination, with the lever D, having the cavity L, of the lever E, pivoted in the cavity, and the j aw H, pivoted on the lever E, and having a lug, H said lever E and jaw H having mold-recesses, substantially as herein shown and described.

In a bullet-mold, the combination, with the lever D, having a cavity, L, of the-plate M, provided with a casting-aperture, M, the lever E, pivoted at the inner end of the cavity L, and the jaw H, pivoted on the lever, said lever E and jaw H having mold-recesses, 3 5 substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a bullet-mold, the combination,with the lever'D, having a cavity, L, and a castingaperture in its top, of the lever E, having a recess, N, and the jaw H, pivoted on the lever E, and having a recess, N, which recesses form the cavity for receivingthe molten lead, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. In a bullet-mold, the combination, with the lever D, having a cavity, L, of the lever E, pivoted in the said cavity, the jaw H, pivoted on the lever, the pins d d on the lever E and jaw H, respectively, and the spring K, said lever E and jaw H having mold-recesses, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. In a bullet-mold, the combination, with the lever D, having a cavity, L, of the lever E, having a lug, E, the pi'votedjaw H, and the spring 0, for pressing the ends of the levers from eachother, said lever E and jaw H having mold-recesses, substantially as herein shown and described. I
8. In a bullet-mold, the combination, with the lever D, having a cavity, L, and the shoulder L and stop L, of the lever E, the pivoted jaw H, having a lug, H and of the spring 0, said lever E and j aw H having moldrecesses, substantially as herein shown and described.
