tlNiTnn STATES ?ATENT FOLDING COAT-HANGER.
Application tiled February 27, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, GEORGE H. DONALD soN, of \Vestville Centre, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Coat- Hanger, of which thet'ollowingisa full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a broken front elevation of my new and improved coathanger as it appears when arranged for use. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hanger as it appears when folded.
The object of this invention is to provide a practical coat-hanger which may be folded to occupy small space in a traveling bag or trunk, and may be adjusted to suit coats of different sizes; and the invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the main sections of the coat-hanger. These sections are hinged together by the hinge a, to which is attached the yoke I), to which yoke is swiveled the ring 0, by whichthe hanger is adapted to be hung upon ahook or pin.
Upon the sections A A are placed the sections 13 B, which are adapted to slide upon the sections A, and are adapted to be secured at any desired point thereon, according to the size of the coat, by the set-screws Z) b, which pass through the cross-pieces d d, and impinge at their inner ends against the inner surfaces of the sections A A. The hinge c is a stop hinge,"and it may be of any common construc tionlike the hinges of a pockcta'ule, for example-arranged to permit the main sections of the hanger to be folded back to back, as shown in Fig. 3, and also arranged to hold or stop the main sections in line or nearly in line with each other when the sections are n11- folded; but, instead of using a common stophinge, I prefer to form the main sections A A at their adjacent ends with. the inclined portions a a, which are beveled in opposite directions away from each other, and to place between these inclined portions the block f, which is by preference \/-shaped in cross-see tion, and is attached to the pin of the hinge a by the small screw-rod e, which is fixed to said pin, on which red the block f may be adjusted up or down for varying the pitch of the main sections of the hanger when arranged for use accordingto the slope of the shoulders -of the coat to be suspended upon the hanger. The under surfaces of the sections A A have the graduation-marks 7 formed on them to as sist in adjusting the sliding sections B so that they may stand at equal distances from the hinge a. By making the sectionsB adjustable, and by employing the adjustable block f, it will be seen that the hanger may be arranged both in length and slope to exactly fit the coat tobe placed upon it, which is necessary for keeping the coat in shape at the shoulders, and by these adjustments the hanger may be titted to coats of various sizes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.. In a coat-hanger, the combination, with sections A A, of the adjustable block and its supporting screw-rod, said sections being hinged, and said serewa'od being fixed to a common hinge-pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In a coat-hanger, the hinged sections A A, having the sliding sections B B, in combination with the adjustable block f said hinged sections and block being connected to a common hinge-pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a coat-hanger, the combination, with the hinged sections, of the block adjustable upon a screw-rod fixed to the hinge-pin of said sections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
-t. In a coat-hanger, the sections A, hinged together and formed with the inclined portions a a, in combination with the sliding sections B B and adjustable block f, for varying the pitch of the sections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The sections A A, secured together by the hinge-pin, and provided with the sliding sections 1, B, the hinge being provided with an adjustable block, f, and the yoke b, having ring 0 swiveled thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE H. DONALDSON.
