(No Model.)
J. L. SUMMER..
SHOE BUTTONBR.
Patented June 23, 1885-.
i No. 320,714.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN L. SOMMER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SHOE-BUTTONER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,714, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed March 13. 1885. (No model.)
I?) all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. SOMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Buttoners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in shoe-fasteners or button-hooks; and the object of my improvement is to provide such implements with a handle having facilities for holding buttons and their attachments and the other articles required in the operation of applying buttons to shoes.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of a shoe-buttoner containing my improvements, the cap being removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in section of the upper part of the handle and cap.
Let a represent, in general, a shoe-buttoner, of which I) is the handle, and c a hook of the ordinaryv formsecured to one end thereof. The handle b is bored or hollowed out longitudinally nearly its entire length to form a reccss, (2, into which may be placed shoe-buttons, with their fastening devices, and such other articles as are required in the operation of piercing the material and securing the buttons on the shoe. The outer end of the handle bis prolonged and reduced in diameter to form a shoulder, e, and on this continuation is provided an inclined groove, f, which ex tends from the top edge to about midway of its length, and but partially around its periphery.
g is a cap, adapted to lit over the open end of the handle and rest against the shoulder c. This is preferably made of thin metal. On the inner surface of the cap is provided a stud or projection, h, adapted to fitinto the groove f on the handle. In place of a stud a protuberance may be formed 011 the inner surface of the cap by striking up the metal from the outside. In adjusting the cap over the end of the handle the stud will be forced to enter the groove, when, by a partial revolution, the stud will abut against the end wall of the groove, and the cap will be fitted close to the handle.
By this arrangement a very simple and effective locking device is obtained for the cap.
Within the recessed handle is provided the pocketz', for holding the piercing-needlej, used in inserting the buttons through the shoe.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a shoebuttoner, the combination of a button-hook having a hollow handle, the outer end of the handle being reduced in size and provided with an external inclined groove, with a cap adapted to fit on the outside thereof, having an internal stud to engage in said groove, as and for the purpose setforth.
JOHN L. SOMMER.
