UNITED STATES PATENT E rcE.
SIMON HELFAER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO 0. G. HANSEN, OF SAME PLACE.
GLOVE OR MlTTEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,497, dated July '7, 1885.
Application filed September 25, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON'HELFAER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves and Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to that class of gloves and mittens which are made of felt-ed, knit, or woven fabrics; and it consists in constructing the same with a protecting and strengthening band across the knuckles, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mitten, showing my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section of the same.
The object of my invention is to strengthen the glove or mitten at the point on the back direttly over the knuckles, which partusually gives out first, as severe strain comes on this point when the hand is bent in grasping any thing. To remedy this,l provide the glove or mitten with a strip or re-enforce,of leather or other stout material, whereby the glove or mitten is prevented from stretching or spreading laterally, and whereby, also, it is strengthened and protected across the knuckles or joints where the fingcrsjoin the body of the hand.
A indicates the body of the glove or mitten, which may be made of any suitable material, such as gloves or mittens usually are madeof, and B indicates the exterior facing, which is applied to the palm of the glove or mitt in some cases, according to the use to which the article is subjected. \Vhen the lining B is used, it is carried back over the edges or sides of the mitt, as shown in Fig. 1.
0 indicates the strengthening-strip, which extends transversely across the glove or mitten, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and may be stitched or otherwise secured thereto. It is made, usually, of the same material as the faceing of the glove 0r mitten, care being taken in all cases to select a material which shall he flexible, yet prevent the objectionable spreading and stretching of the glove or mitten. It is attached at both ends to the overlapping edges of the lining B, as shown in Fig. 1, thus formin g with said facing a continuous band around the glove or mitten, which effectually prevents any stretching when the hand is doubled up.
The strip may have any configuration and be made of any suitable material, though I prefer buckskin, as it is pliable and serves to stiffen the glove and prevent stretching.
While I have shown the invention applied only to mittens or fingerless gloves, it is apparent that it can be equally well applied to gloves with fingers.
Having thus described my inventiou,wh.at I claim is 1. A glove or mitten provided with a continuous strengthening-strip extending across the knuckle portion from side to side.
2. A glove or mitten provided on its exterior with a continuous strengthening-strip extending across the knuckle portion from side to side.
SIMON HELFAER.
