declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a vertical sectional view of our machine. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
This invention has relation to machines for washing clothes. and other purposes; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in combination with the tub and the removable slat base-frame, of the springelevated lid having sloping flanges, its end bearings and latches, the circular face ratchet and its guard-plate,the reciprocating plun ger-rod having a spline to engage the ratchet, the transverse-valved air-compressing plunger,the pawl, and mechanism whereby the pawl and plunger are operated from the same shaft.
Theinvention also consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with a rotary plunger operated by ratchet and pawl, of a transverse lever carrying a pivoted sleeve-coupling for the plunger-rod, and a pitman connected to a crank-shaft, an eccentric on the crank-shaft, a reciprocating spring-bar engaging said eccentric, and a crank-lever pivoted centrally to the frame and by its ends, respectively, to the springbar and to the pawl which operates the ratchet; and the invention consists in the combination, with a spring-elevated lid carrying a ratchet and a splined plunger-rod, of a yielding main lever and a crank-shaft carrying an eccentric, a pawl and intermediate mechanism between the pawl and eccentric, whereby rotary and reciprocating motions are given to the plunger, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame of the machine, consisting, essentially, of the lateral uprightsB B and the transverse base 0, on which is pivoted a horizontally swinging support, D, which carries the tub E.
F represents the lid, having a circumferential sloping flange, a, which is of larger diainetric scope than the tub-margin, so that when pressed down, therefore, it wlll extend over the tub-margin and inclose 1t. The lid is made in two sections, 1) and c, the former extending beyond the center and the latter being hinged thereto, so that it can be readily opened and closed. \Vhen in the latter position the section 0 is held down by a hook, d. The lid is formed with extensions e,wh1ch engage guide-slots in the uprights, and are seated upon elevating-springs f, which are in turn seated upon bearings g. The effect of these springs is to hold the lid in elevated position.
When the lid is pressed down to the tub for operation, it is held down firmly by means of the lateral buttons h, pivoted to the uprights and engaging the extensions 6.
In the bottom of the tub is placed a slatframe, G, which is designed to hold the goods being washed up from the bottom and to assist the cleansing operation of the plunger,
The air-compressing plunger H is of elongated pyramidal form, chambered fro it base upward, and provided with an lnternal horizontal strip or partition, J, which is fitted on its under side with valves Z, opening downward. This plunger is also provided in its top with guide-apertures k, for th al rods. This plunger is provided, also, with a perforated base, m, which consists, preferably, of a mesh work of galvanized wire. The plunger extends diametrically in the tub, and is secured at its middle portion to the reciprocating rod K, which extends vertically upward through an opening in the main section of the lid.
The upper end of the plunger is held in a sleeve coupling, L, the rotary band L of which is provided with side pivots, n, which engage bearings on the lateral bars of the main lever M, one end of which is pivoted in IOO a vertical slot, m, of one of the uprights of the frame, as at p. A rear extension, 0", of
this lever is connected to the upright below by a spring, 8, and the lever is by this construction adapted to yield readily and accommodate itself to any inequalities of the mass of goods being washed. The other end of the lever is provided with anti'friction rollers tt, which engage the guide end i) of an upright of the frame, as shown.
The plunger-rod passes throughthe center of a circular face ratchet-plate, N, which rests on the top of the lid, and is provided with an inner slot, 2, to engage the spline a of the rod. A guard-plate, I), over the ratchet-plate serves to hold it down to its position on the lid during the vertical movement of the rod.
P represents the main operating-sh aft, which is seated in bearings c of the frame and can ries a flywheel, It. At its inner end a crankarm, S, is provided,which engages the pitman I, the upper end of which is pivoted between the lateral bars of the main lever. The shaft also carries a cam, T, which operates upon the upper end of a reciprocating bar, V, which is in turn acted upon by an elevating-spring, d.
U represents a crank-lever, which has its fulcrum c on the main frame. One arm of this crank-lever is pivoted to the reciprocating bar V, and its other and vertical arm to the end of the long pawl Z, which extends to and engages the circular face ratchet on the lid of the tub. This pawl is provided with a guide-slot, g, which engages a guide-stud, h, on the lid, and although it is preferably made of wood its point is armed with metal, as at 70. When the lid is to be removed, the pawl can be swung laterally upward out of the way.
XVhen the main shaft is turned, it operates the main lever through the crank-and-pitman connection, and thereby gives vertical reciprocating motion to the plunger. At the same time it acts, through the cam, to depress the reciprocating bar V, operating the crank-lever and pawl, and thereby causing the ratch etplate to turn with the plunger-rod. The cam and crank of the main shaft are so guarded with reference to the crank-lever and pawl and the main lever and plunger that the ratchet is always operated on the rising movement of the plunger-rod. In this manner the plunger is turned, and thus descends in a steady manner.
The air-compressing plunger is designed to make the washing an easy operation when operated in the manner indicated above. lts valves allow it to rise out of the water with ease, and they close at once when the plunger strikes the water. The slatted false bottom in the tub facilitates the action of the plunger in forcing air and water downward through the goods in the tub.
The lid closing down tightly prevents the splashing of the water and retains the steam to a great extent, so that the goods are in a measure bleached while being washed.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. The combination, with the tub and relnovable slat-base frame, of the spring-clevated lid having sloping flanges, its end bearings and latches, the circular face ratchet and its guard-plate, the reciprocating plunger-rod having a spline to engage the ratchet, the valved air-compressing plunger, the pawl, and mechanism, substantially as described, whereby the pawl and plunger are operated from the same shaft, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a rotary plunger operated by ratchet and pawl, ofa transverse lever carrying a pivoted sleeve-coupling for the plunger-rod, and a pitman connected to a crank-shaft, a cam on the crank-shaft, a reciprocating spring-bar engaging said can], and a crank-lever pivoted centrally to the main frame, and, by its ends, respectively, to the spring-bar and to the pawl which operates the ratchet, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the spring elevated lid carrying a ratchet and the splined plunger-rod, of a yielding main lever, and a crankshaft carrying cam, whereby rotating and reciprocating motions are given to the plunger, substantially as specified.
