UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM DoRsEY GOODSON, OF EUFAULA, ALABAMA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,104, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed March 30, 1885. (No model.)
A .To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DORSEY GooDsoN, of Eufaula, in the county of Barbour and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Leverrench for Tightcning Bolts on Fish-Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved lever-wrench for turning the nuts on the bolts of fishplates, which lever-wrench is so constructed as to turn two nuts at the same time.
The invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved 1ever-wrench for tightening bolts on fish-plates, showing the wrench applied on the rail. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same on the rail. Fig. 3 is a side view of the wrench.
The bar B is provided with a longitudinal slot, 0, extending down to near its lower end, and on the lower end of the said bar a key, D, is formed, which is provided with asquared recess for receiving the nut H, on the end of a bolt, H, passed through the fish-plate J on the rail K. A stud or pin, a, projects from the outer side of the bar B, near the lower end. On the outer side of the bar B a bar, E, is held by a bolt, F, passed through the slot G and through an aperture in the bar E. The lower part of the bar E is curved, and on its end the key F is formed. At the upper end of the curved part 0 of the bar E adownwardly-projecting lug, G, is provided, at the upper end of which a recess, f, is formed.
The device is used in the following manner: The two keys D and F are placed on the nuts H H, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and the bar B is swung in the direction of the arrow at, thus causing the key D to turn its nut. The bar E swings with the bar B, the bolt F sliding upward in the slot 0, and the key F turns its nut. An additional aperture, b, is provided in the bar E, through which aperture the bolt F can be passed in case the bar E is to be held higher on the bar Bthat is, in case the bar E is not to drop to such an extent that the pin a can passinto the notch f. When the bolt F passes through the upper aperture in the bar E, the pin a can pass into the notchf and prevent the bar E from dropping farther. When the bar E slides down the bar B, the lug G, striking the pin a, guides it into the notch f. The wrench isin this position while being applied as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lever-wrench, the combination, with a bar having a key formed on its. end, of an additional bar held on the firstmentioned bar and also provided with a key on its end, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a lever-wrench, the combination, with a straight bar having a key formed on its end, ofa bar having a curve and held on the straight bar, which curved bar has a key formed on its end, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In alever-wrench, the combination, with the straight bar B, provided with the longitudinal slot 0, on the end of which bar the key D is formed, of the bar E, provided with a curve, 0, and the key F at the end, and of the bolt F, passed through the bar E and the slot 0 of the bar B, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a lever-wrench, the combination, with the bar B, having the slot 0 and forming the key D, of the bar E, forming the key F and provided with a prong or lug, G, and recess f, the stud or pin a on the bar B, and the bolt F, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM DORSEY GOO DSON.
