we/vra@ Jose-PH H. amr/EMM United States Patent O 3,285,254 COMBINATION CIGARETTE HOLDER AND SNUFFER Joseph H. Danelak, Detroit, Mich., assignor of forty-nine percent to Witold T. Danielak, Detroit, Mich. Filed Apr. 20, 1964, Ser. No. 361,153 3 Claims. (Cl. 131-235) The present invention relates to a combination cigarette holder and snufIer and more particularly to a device positionable within an ash receptacle or ashtray.
It is the object of the persent invention to provide a simple and inexpensive combination cigarette holder and snuffer which is normally positionable within an ashtray and securable therein and which has the primary objective of providing a simplified means for holding a burning cigarette in a horizontal position and is provided with a snufiing device for putting out the -cigarette by mounting the burning end thereof in a vertical position.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a fourth modification as mounted within an ashtray.
FIG. 2 is a section taken in the direction of arrows 13-13 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a section taken in the direction of arrows 14-14 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a plan view of a fifth modification thereof.
FIG. 5 is a side elevational view thereof.
FIG. 6 is a side elevational view 0f a sixth modification thereof.
FIG. 7 is a section taken in the direction of arrows 18-18 of FIG. 6.
FIG. 8 is a side elevational View of a seventh modification thereof.
FIG. 9 is a section taken in the direction of arrows Ztl- 20 of FIG. 8.
FIG. is a side elevational View of an eighth modification thereof.
FIG. ll is a section taken in the direction of arrows 22--22 of FIG. 10.
It will be understood that the above modifications illustrate merely several preferred embodiments of the invention, and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set forth.
A first form of the invention 27, is shown in FIGS. l, 2 and 3, wherein the elongated body includes a pair of upright engaging plates 28 which are foldably interconnected along their lower edges as at 29. The said plates have Oppositely and outwardly bowed portions 30 to define one or more upright apertures 31, FIG. 1. The respective bowed portions 30 have U-shaped cut-outs 32 at their upper ends to form cigarette holding slotted portions.
Central portions of the plates 28 are Oppositely and outwardly bowed at 33 and are adapted to receive the threaded shank 34 of the fastener 35 which projects up through the bottom wall 36 of the ashtray 37 within which the present body is transversely positioned. It is lnoted that the end portions of the walls 28 cooperatively register with the side walls of the ashtray, FIG. 2, to limit downward movement thereof.
Modification No. 1
This modification 38, FIGS. 4 and 5, is particularly adapted for mounting upon the conventional receptacle for ashes and cigarettes normally found in automobiles and which includes opposed upright side walls 41. The combination cigarette holder and snulfer includes a first cylindrical portion 41' and depending therefrom a second cylindrical portion 42 of reduced diameter providing an upwardly opening aperture 43 adapted to cooperatively receive a burning cigarette in upright position for snuliing the same. Opposing wall portions of the first cylindrical portion 41 have opposed U-shaped cut-outs 44 therein of such a dimension as to cooperatively support a burning cigarette in a horizontal position intermediate its ends. Oppositely and outwardly extending support plates 39 extend from opposite sides of the first cylindrical portion 41 and at their ends are down-turned, as at 40, for 4cooperative securing assembly and registry upon the interior of the side walls 41 of the receptacle, shown in FIGS. 4 and 5.
Modification No. 2
A second modification of the combination cigarette holder and snulfer is generally indicated at 45 in FIGS. 6 and 7, and includes a pair of substantially upright plates 46 and 50 which are interconnected along fold line 49 at their lower ends with one plate extending above the other. Said one plate terminates at its upper edge in an elongated reversed curved or rolled over elongated shoulder 47. Said shoulder has one or more U-shape-d cut-outs 48 formed therethrough and opening upwardly to the top of the body providing a means of supporting a burning cigarette intermediate its ends.
The other or shorter wall 50 terminates in an upper edge 51 having the form shown in FIG. 6, having a central portion which is below the shoulder 47 and which includes a corresponding series of U-shaped cut-outs 52 which register with the cut-outs 48 to provi-de an additional support for a burning cigarette mounted in a holding position.
Both of the front and rear walls of the body include Oppositely and outwardly arranged bowed portions 53 which define one or more upright or vertical apertures 54 adapted to receive the burning end portion of a cigarette for snufiing the same. Bottom portions of the side walls 50 and 46 are cut-away, as at 55, FIG. 17, for registry with apertures 54.
Third modification- A sixth modification is generally indicated at 56 in FIGS. 8 and 9, and includes an elongated body consisting of a pair of substantially upright plates 57 andSS which are in substantial engagement with each other being interconnected and folded along their lower edges, as at 59.
lPlate 57 extends above plate 58 and along its top edge has one `or more upwardly opening U-shaped cut-outs 60 o-f such width as to supp-ort a burning cigarette intermediate its ends. The shorter wall 58 terminates in an upper end portion 61 which registers with the bottom portion of said U-shaped'cut-outs to provide additional cooperating supporting ntructure for mounting a cigarette within cut-outs 60.
Both of the walls 58 and 57 have opposed outwardly bowed portions 162 to define la series partly tapered upright apertures 63 of such dimension as to cooperatively and frictionally receive the burning end portion of a cigarette. Lower portions of the respective walls 58 and 57 are cut away at 64, FIG. 8, for registry at the bottom of apertures 63.
The combination cigarette holder and snulfer, generally indicated iat 56, is normally nested within an ashtray above its bottom wall 67 with end portions of the side plates 57 and 58 engaging the side walls 66 of said ashtray. Opposed pairs of upright spaced retainers `65 are mounted on and project inwardly of the side walls 66 of the ashtray, 4fragmentarily shown in FIG. 8, and are adapted to cooperatively and supportably receive the combination cigarette holder and snufer 56 in the upright position shown.
Fourth modification A final modification No. 7 is -generally indicated at 68 in FIGS. 10 and 1l and includes an elongated body which incorporates an elongated dome y69 'from the lower edges of which depend the inwardly displaced side plates 71. One or more transverse U-shaped upwardly opening notches -or cut-outs 72 are formed within the dome 69 providing supporting means for receiving a burning cigarette intermediate its ends.
Opposed portions of plates 71 and adjacent portions of the dome l69 are -bowed outwardly, as at 73, to define one or more upwardly opening apertures 74, FIG. 11, adapted to cooperatively and supportably receive the burning end of a cigarette for snufing the same.
In this connection the modification "68 is positioned within an ashtary having a -bottom wall 78 and an tannular side wall terminating in a continuous support flange 76.
Opposite end portions of the dome l69 have outwardly directed support anges 75 rwhich bear against and upon flange 76 and are suitably secured thereto as bybrazing or welding at 77.
The present holder and snufer for cigarettes can be made of Various materials, including ceramics, metal, Fiberglas, and can `be formed as desired and canbe molded or drilled.
Having ydescribed my invention, reference should :now be had to the following claims.
I claim:
