Description
W. ALLDERDICE.
DIE.
N0. 329,801. Patented Nov. 3, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVINSLOW ALLDERDIOE, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AKRON IRON COMPANY, OF SAME PLAGE.
DIE.
SPECII'ICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 329,801, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed J anuary 26, 1885.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVINSLOW ALLDERDIOE, aeitizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county 0f Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dies for Drawing, Compressing, and Polishing Gold Metal Bars, 0f whieh the following is a specification.
The prineipal features 0f 1ny invention cousist 0f the die being formed with an opening through it, in part a tapering curve and in part tangential t0 such curve, and also the rear end being of a flaring f011n.
In the drawings forming a part 0f this speeification, Figure l is a section ofthe die and its holder. Fig. 2 is a side view of the die, and Fig. 3 is a front view 0l' the same.
The die a 0 is formed With an opening, c, through which cold metal bars may be drawn and thereby comprcssed and polished. The
' front part 0f opening c is flaring in substantially a parabolie curve, and the rear part 0f the opening is eylindrieal and tangential t0 the curved part, exeept at the end, whieh is slightly flaring. In this form of opening c there is spaee l'or lubricating material in the front part around the bar to be drawn, and the gradually-decreasing eontraetion 0f the opening inward t0 the cylindrical part facilitates the operation 0f drawing, compressing, and polishing the bar, as the contraction is least where the force 0f compression is greatest. The flaring front part 0f opening 0 may be formed, if desired, in a different eurve from 5 a parabola, a-s an are of a eirele to which the cylindrical part 0f the die is tangential. At the rear end of the die its opening c is flaring, t0 prevent breaking the die from the expansion 0f the metal bar when released from 00m- 4.0 pression in drawing it through the die. Such expansion is slight, but 0f great force, and if the die at the rear end of its opening 0 is cy lindrieal the edges 01 eorner are liable t0 be broken by the expansion 0f the bar 011 emerg- 5 ing from the opening c.
The die consists 0f the inner steel part, a, and an outer wrought-iron part er jacket, 0. The diameter 0f steel part a is reduced at Serial N0. 153 974. (N0 model.)
its rear end, fofn1ing a shonlder, s, and the wrought-iron jaeket 0 has a redueed rear part, o, forming a shoulder, s, f0r a bearing against die-holder b. The jacket o is sweated on the steel partthat is, it is heated at 0r abouta red heat, then placed 0n the die and allowed to shrink there by eooling. The jaeket forms a permanent part of the die, which is made to fit closely in its holder b by driving it in the latter, which is forrned t0 receive it.
Instead 0f the two parts a 0, the die may be formed of a single piece of steel.
I claim as my invention l. A die for drawing, compressing, and polishing eold metal bars, having an opening the front part of whieh is of a curved tapering form, and another part is formed with parallel sides tangential t0 the eurved part, substantially as described.
2. A die f0r drawing, eompressing, and polishing cold metal bare, of such forn1 that the interseetion 0f a plane through the axis of the die-opening with the side of the Opening will be in part a parabolie curve and in part parallel With the axis of the opening and tangential t0 said curve, substantially as described.
3. A die for drawing, eompressing, and polishing cold metal bare, formed With an opening that is flaring at both ends, and has parallel sides intermediate the flaring parts, substantially as described.
4. A die f0r drawing, cornpressing, and polishing cold metal bars, formed with an opening, c, having a flaring rear end, n, substantially as described.
5. The die a o, formed of the steel part a 85 and awrought-iron jaeket, o, shrunk thereon, substantially as deseribed.
6. The die a o, having a reduced rear end, forming a shoulderbearing, s, against the die-holder b, in combination with said holder, 0 formed to reeeive the die, substantially as described.
