To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH PANNELL GIB- BINs, submarine mining and electrical engineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 4 Osborne Terrace, Coombe Farm Lane, Westcombe Park, in the county of Kent, England, have invented certain Improvements in Cases for Submarine Mines, (for. which I have made application for patent in Great Britain, No. 11,886, dated September 2, 1884, and have obtained a patent in France, dated December 24, 1884, No.
166,105,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of the case for containing the exploding-charge of submarine mines, and to arrangementsfor enabling the charge to be inserted at one operation. According to my invention the outer case is constructed of two hemispheres of iron or steel, (preferably of malleable cast -iron,) the two halves being bolted or otherwise equivalently fastened together and made water-tight by means of in- 2 5 dia-rubber or other suitable'packing material.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- 0 Figure lrepresents a vertical section of one half, and Fig. 2 in similar View the other half, of the improved case.
The spherical case is made of two hemispheres, A B, provided with flanges a and b,

5 opening is left in the bottom hemisphere, B, for the insertion of the envelope or casing containing the primary charge. In the inside of the lower hemisphere, B, are also cast, formed,
or fixed corner-brackets or angle pieces b 12 formed or angled so as to support both at bottom and at the corners a sheet-iron box or shell, E, (preferably square) containing the charge of gun-cotton or other explosive. This box contains a central cylinder or chamber, esay about six inches diameter and ten inches high-which cylinder or chamber is open at the bottom, but closed at the top, and is intended to receive a similar but somewhat smaller cylinder or casing, F, containing the circuit-closer, detonators, and priming-charge 6 of the explosive.
The box E, being fitted into the angle-pieces or corner-brackets 12 is secured in position by means of bolts and nuts I) b or equivalent modes of fastening, and by cross-bars biwhich 6 5 reach diagonally from corner to corner of or across the box E, and are long enough to abut against the inside of the case. The box or case E is intended to be kept charged with gun-cotton or other explosive, and is tightly 7o closed, the joints being made secure and watertight by suitable cement or filling material.
The apparatus by'which the mine is tested and fired, and also the primary charge, are inclosed in the cylinder F, which is secured tightly by a filling-piece inserted in the opening left in the bottom of the part B, the basepiece of the cylinder F and the said fillingpiece being secured by bolts and nuts or in any other convenient way to the part of the case B.
I claim 1. In a submarine mine, in combination with two hemispheres forming the shell or casing,
a box for containing the explosive charge, and 8 5 means for holding said box within one of said hemispheres, an opening in the same hemisphere, and a case for the detonating-fuses adapted to be applied to said opening and close the same, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a case for submarine mines, consisting of two hemispherical parts fixed together, interior corner-brackets on one hemisphere, and an inner rectangular case or shell containing the explosive charge and resting on said brackets, substantially as set forth.
