CARL HOLLVVEG, OF BARMEN, GERMANY.
BRACKET- ARi il.
fiPTiCIFICATION-Forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,587, dated "Blevember 17, 1885.
Application filed July 20, 1885.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL HOLLWEG, of Barmen, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bracket-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bracket-arms for sup porting and holding candles, mirrors, lamps, 85c. and the object of my invention is to construct the said arms in such a manner that they can be extended or shortened very easily and have an elegant appearance, both when extended or contracted.
The invention consists in a bracket-arm formed of a series of links pivoted to each other, acted upon by springs between them,- and locked in line by suitable latches.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved bracket-arm contracted. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same extended, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of part of the bracket-arm. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional elevation of the same on the line as 00, Fig. 2.
From a plate or rosette, A, the arm 13 projects, and from the top of the said arm a pin, 0, projects, which passes into an eye, D, in the end of a bracket, D, which is thus mounted to swing laterally. On each side of the bracket D a track-plate, E, is secured along the top edge, the rear parts of the tracks being curved up toward the rear and tapered, as at E, the top edge, D of the bracket projecting above the top edges of the tracks E. The side plates, F, of the bracket have their top edges recessed at F to form a track. A longitudinal recess or cavity, G, is thus formed in each side of the bracket. Near the front or Swinging end of the bracket two plates, H, are secured to the sides of the same, the top edges of which plates are curved and act as cams. The arm J is formed of a series of links, K, pivoted to each other at their upper corners by the pivots K. Around each pivot a powerfulspiral spring, L, is coiled, which rests against shoulders of the links and turns or swings the links on their pivots K toward each other until the shoulders I of the links Serial No. 172,070. (Model) are in contact. side piece of each link K a latch, P, is pivoted, each having a hook, P, at one end, and a downwardly-curved prong, Q, at the other end. Each link is provided near its. bottom edge with a notch or recess, It, for receiving the hook P of the latch on the preceding link. On the front link K an arm, S, is se- On the inner surface of each cured, which carries the candle-holder T or a I I notches R of the adjacent links, thus locking the links together and preventing the springs Lswinging them toward each other, whereby a stiff arm is formed. when the arm is to be folded or contracted,it is pushed in the inverse direction of the arrow a, and when the curved prongs Q of the latches P pass over the top edges of the cam-plates H they are pushed upward, and thereby the hooks P are withdrawn from the notches or recesses R of the adjacent links, thus permitting the springs L to throw the links up and toward each other, to form the circle shown in Fig. 1. The link-arm can be drawn out more or less, and the inner curved end always forms a handsome ornament.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bracket-arm formed of links jointed together with their sides in the same plane, to swing in a plane parallel with said sides, the links being pivoted at their upper ends, to permit the lower ends to swing from each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A bracket-arm formed of links pivoted to each other, and having springs on their pivots, the ends of the springs acting on the links, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. A bracket-arm formed of the links K, having the shoulders I, the pivots K, uniting the links, and the springs L on the pivots and having their ends rested against the links, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with a series of links pivoted together, of latches pivoted to the links for the purpose of locking the links together, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with a series of links pivoted together, of springs acting on the links, and of latches pivoted to the links for the purpose of locking them together, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The combination, with a bracket having tracks, of an arm formed of a series of links pivoted together, whicharm can slide on the bracket, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. The combination, with a bracket having tracks and cams, of an arm formed of a series of links pivoted together, and of latches pivoted to the links, substantially as herein
