U-Nrrnn STATES PATENT CONRAD LORENZ, or new YORK, N.'Y.
PRESS-BOARD FOR CiGAR-BOXES SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 331,510, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed April 4, 1885. Serial No. 16L185. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CONRAD LORENZ, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Press-Boards for Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved press-board for cigar-boxes, which can be adj usted to any length of box, so as to be conveniently used by cigarpackers in packing cigars, in place of the different sizes of pressboards heretofore in use.
The invention consists of a press-board for cigar-boxes, formed of a main piece having a central transverse bottom strip, and of adjustable extension-pieces having transverse end strips which are straight at their outer and tapering at their inner sides. the adjustable extension-pieces of the pressboard and the main piece are interposed dovetailed strips of different widths, according to the length to which the pressboard is to be extended. The detachable strips are stored away in a box-shaped receptacle formed by the main pieces and extension-pieces, and inclosed by a hinged cover that is attached by locking devices to the main piece.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of a cigar-box, with my improved press'board shown in position in the box. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved press-board, shown partly extended. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on lineup at, Fig. 4.; Fig. 4, a plan with the hinged cover in open position; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sec tion on line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main piece and B B the extension pieces of my improved press-board for cigar-boxes. The main piece A is provided at its under side with a fixed central transverse strip, a, that is beveled at both sides and provided with a downwardly-extending tapering piece, a, which latter separates the cigar-bundles, as shown in Fig. 1. The extension-pieces B B are guided by shorter top pieces, B B, along beveled side strips, b b, at the top, and central grooves along central dovetail guide-rails, 6,
Between at the under side of the main piece A. The extension-pieces B B are provided withdownwardly-projecting transverse end strips, d d,
which are made tapering at their inner sides and straight at their outer sides, so as to fit snugly into the cigar-boxes. The top pieces, B, of the extensionpieces B B are connected by a strong spiral spring, 0, which is attached to eyes of the top pieces, B'. The inner edges of the extension-pieces B B are made beveled, for the purpose of inserting between them and the beveled sides of the strip an interchangeable strips D D of dovetail shape and different widths, according to the length to which the 'pressboard is to be adjusted. By providing anumber of dovetailed strips D D the extension-pieces B B can be adjusted to any length of cigar-box, from the shortest to the longest, by simply pulling the extensionpieces in outward direction against the tension of the spring 0 and inserting strips D D of the required thickness between the inner ends of the extension-pieces and the transverse bottom strip, a.
After use the detachable strips D D are stored away between the upper parts, B B, of the extensions B B and the side strips, 72 b, of the main piece A, and then covered by a hinged cover, E, which is locked to the main piece A by a hook and eye, 6 e, or other fastening device. hen the press board has been adjusted to the proper length of cigarbox and placed on the cigar-bundles in the same, as shown in Fig. 1, the box is placed with the press-board in the usual manner into a press, and the press-board pressed down on the cigars until the required degree of compression is obtained. The pressboard is then removed and placed on the next box, and soon. As the width of the press-board remains the same for all sizes of boxes, the pressboard requires only to be adjusted in longitudinal direction, as the pressure has to be exerted on the middle thicker portion of the cigarbundles, so as to reduce them sufiiciently in size to fit into the box.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of a main piece hav ing a central transverse bottom strip, adjust- .able extension-pieces having end strips, and
interchangeable strips interposed between the main piece and extension-pieces to regulate the length of the press-board, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a main piece having a transverse central bottom strip, adjustable extension -pieces gr'iided on the main piece and having transverse end strips and a spiral spring connecting the extension-pieces, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a main piece having a central transverse bottom strip, adjustable extension-pieces guided on said main piece, and provided with transverse end strips beveled at their inner sides, a spiral spring connecting the inner ends of the extension-pieces, and interchangeable strips interposed between the main and extension pieces, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a main piece, adj ustable extension pieces guided on the main piece, interchangeable strips interposed between the main and extension pieces, and a cover hinged to the main piece and inclosing a storage-space between the main and extension pieces for the interchangeable strips, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, of a main piece, A, having guide-strips b b, and a central transverse bottom-strip, a a, adjustable extensionpieces B B, having top pieces, B B, and end strips, (1 d, spiral spring 0, connecting the top pieces, B B, and interchangeable strips D D, that are interposed between the transverse strip a and the extension-pieces B B, substantially as set forth. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CONRAD LORENZ.
