Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFETCE.`
HENRY FEYH, OF COLUMBUS, O lllO.
IMPROVED HOSE-COUPLING.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,430, dated October 8, 1861.
. To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FEYH., of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and StateV scription of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this l specification, in which- Figure l is an external view ot` my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, taken in the line xx, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, taken in the line y fy, Fig. 2.
Similar letters ot' reference indica-te corresponding parts in the several iigu res.
Hose-couplings have been made iu which the edges of the face of one butt were provided with parallel tongues which fitted into corresponding parallel grooves made in the face or edges ot' the other butt. Couplings thus made soon become leaky and worthless by the wea-ring of the tongues and grooves, and also by the strain to which they are subjected. No method ot' adjustment to compensate forsuch wear has ever been known or employed so far as l know. In the present improvement lovercome the above-named difficulties by the employment of a clamping-ange and screw-thimble, so combined with other parts as to obviate all of the difficulties above named.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A B represent two butts, which are secured in the usual way to the ends of hose. The butt A is provided with a screwthread d near its outer end, and on this thread a thimble C is placed, the thimble being provided with an internal screw-thread b. The butt A has a groove c made in it circumferentially, and a screw D passes through the thiuible into groove c, the latter being wider than the thickness of the screw in order to allow the thimble a certain degree of play or movement on the butt A. (See Fig. 2.) The end of the butt A has an annular packing d ti ted in it, said packing being of leatheror other suitable material, and fitted in a groove a* in the butt, which groove has a lip e projecting over its outer edge to retain the packing in proper place, as will be fully understood by referring to Fig. 2. The thimble C is provided with a fiange E, which extends around one -half of its periphery, and has tangential ends e which project a trifle beyond the periphery of the thimble. (See Fig.
The butt B has a groovefmade circumferentially in it near its end, and this groove receivesa lipgat the end of the flange E, the butt B being allowed to slide freely in and out of the iiange E when the parts are not connected together. The end of the butt B is provided with an annular ledge h, which lits into the groove afk. I
From the above description it will be seen that when the butt B is tted in the flangeE of the thimble O, and the latter screwed backward on butt A as far as possible, the ledge 7L will abut against the packing d in the groove dii, and hence the butt B will be prevented from moving laterally out from the flange .g
E, while the lip g of flange E, fitting in the groove f prevents the longitudinal detachment of the butts. ln order to disconnect the butt-s the thimble O is screwed forward on butt A until the ledge h is out of groove dit. The butt B may then be shoved laterally out from the flange E.
The device is extremely simple and efficient. There areno parts liable to get out of repair, and the butts may be very expeditiously connected and disconnected.
l do not claim, broadly, the fitting together of hose-pipes by having one part provided with a groove and the other part with a corresponding tongue; nor do l claim a closingpipe as my invention; but,
Having thus described my invention, what y I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The semiannular clampingflange E, in
combination with the screw-thimble O, screwthimble a, and butts A B, as herein shown and described. i
