Description

Oct. 3, 1967 M. VICTOR 3,345,024
ADJUSTABLE FITTINGS FOR INDUSTRIAL, DOMESTIC, AND DISPLAY LAMPS Filed Jan. 24, 1966 INVENTOR.
MAURICE VICTOR United States Patent 3,345,024 ADJUSTABLE FITTINGS FOR INDUSTRIAL, D0- MESTIC, AND DISPLAY LAMPS Maurice Victor, 49 St. Georges Road, Avondale, Auckland, New Zealand Filed Jan. 24, 1966, Ser. No. 523,013 1 Claim. (Cl. 248-122) My invention relates to adjustable fittings to be incorporated in the manufacture of industrial, domestic and display lamps and the like.
Objects of the invention are to provide simple and practical means of efliciently adjusting a lamp to any position within the range of adjustment and automatically locking in the selected position.
The novel features of the invention through which these purposes are attained are set forth in the course of the following specification.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the base and trackway without the tubular support and slide. FIG. 2 is a perspective view showing in detail the trackway and slide in their movable position. FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing the trackway and slide in the locked position, and FIG. 4 is a side view showing the device in its entirety.
The drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates a present practical embodiment of the invention in one form. The drawings show a lamp construction in which parallel twin tracks of strip metal are mounted diagonally on a baseplate and base. A sliding bobbin of metal is held captive within the track by projections or flanges which are part of the bobbin and are positioned above and below the track. These projections are made wide enough to extend to the outer edges of the track or beyond thus effectively housing the central part of the bobbin within the parallel track. The track is narrower than the distance between the upper and lower projections and the reason for this arrangement becomes apparent later in the specification.
The drawings show the only moving part of the adjustable fitting, the sliding bobbin, with a tubular post and lampshade attached, tilted forward and locked by its own weight in a selected position on the track.
As shown in the drawings, the invention comprises a base 1 and baseplate 2 with a parallel twin track 3, 4 fastened to it diagonally. Within the track is a sliding bobbin 5 which is formed with projections or flanges 6, 7 above and below the track, the projections being made wide enough to extend to the outer edges of the track 3, 4 or beyond, thus holding the bobbin 5 captive within the track.
As shown in FIG. 3, the track 3, 4 is narrower than the distance between the upper and lower projections '6, 7 of the sliding bobbin 5 which is fitted with a tubular post 8, lampholder and lampshade 9 and electric cable (not shown).
The sliding bobbin 5 and fitted post 8 combination form the only moving part, and by holding this slide assembly 5 at an approximate right angle position to the track 3, 4, the sliding bobbin 5 can be moved freely to any position up or down the diagonal track. All that is necessary to hold the slide assembly 5 in a selected position is to release it, when its weight will cause it to tilt forward until the leading edge of the upper projection 7 and the trailing edge of the lower projection 6 reach the track 3, 4 and lock on their respective faces (as shown in detail in FIG. 3). Adjustment to a new position may be made by lifting the post sufiiciently to disengage the bearing surfaces 6, 7 of the sliding bobbin from the track 3, 4 (as shown in detail in FIG. 2), moving to a new position and releasing, when the moving section will automatically tilt forward and lock firmly in its new position.
I claim:
A device for supporting a lamp or the like, comprising a base, a supporting trackway supported on said base and extending upwardly and diagonally therefrom, said trackway having spaced parallel vertically extending track portions, a post member for supporting a lamp, said post member having a slide assembly mounted on the lower end portion thereof, said slide assembly having upper and lower flange portions forming spaced bearing surfaces, said flange portions being spaced apart a distance greater than the width of said vertically extending track portions, saidflange portions of the slide assembly receiving said track portions therebetween, whereby the post and slide assembly may be disposed at substantially right angles to said trackway to be moved therealong and may be tilted at an angle to the trackway to cause engagement of the flange portions with the trackway to lock the post and slide assembly in place on the trackway.
