GRANBERRY PICKER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHIAS M. CHW, OF WILLIAMSTOWN, NEV JERSEY.
CRANBERRY-PICKER.
, SPECIFICATION forming pari; of Letters Patent No. 334,565, dated January 19, 1886.
Application tiled November 20, 1884. Serial No.148,459.
To all wwm/ it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MATTI-rms M. CHEw, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in Williamstown, county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Cranberry-Pickers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a front View of a cranberry-picker, partly broken away, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof in line x x, Fig. 1. Fig. Srepresents a plan View thereof, partly broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rectangular frame, formed of metal, of an upper piece, B, and side pieces, G C. Attached to said upper piece, B, are pieces b, which form bearings for side bars, to be hereinafter referred to.
B represents the lower side of said frame. Securely attached to the outer portions of the sides C C are supports D D, each of which is composed of arms D D and a brace-bar, D. The arm D' extends at an angle backward and upward, and the arm D extends forward and upward until about on a level with the top of the side B, when it is bent so that it becomes nearly vertical.
Rigidly secured between the two arms D D', at their upper ends, is a handle, E, and between th'e arms D D is pivotally placed the handle E', having an oscillating or turning motion.
Bigidly fastened to the handle E', and adjacent to the upright portions of the arms D D, are bars F F, each of which has a toggle or elbow joint connection, f, with an adjustable bar, F. The lower ends of bars FFare pivotally connected to side bars, G G, which extend or project forward from the ends of atrtaching-pieces b to points in front of the arms D D. Each of the bars G is adjustable in length and composed of two parts, g g', having slots and screw-bolts, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whereby, when desired, .the length of the bars may be Varied. Acrossbar, G', connects the two front ends of the bars G G.
(No model.)
Firmly secured to and projecting from the sides or bars B'., C C, and G are iingers H, of steel or other suitable material, forming an inclosure, J. The upper series ofthese fingers, or those projecting from the bar G, curve downward, their points being on or about the plane of the points of the fingers, which extend upward nearly in astraight line from thelower side, B. The fingers extending from thesides C C, as well as those from the bar B, are for the greater portion of their lengthstraight, or nearly so, curving upward, however, a little toward their free ends. Those on thesides are not uniform in length, but decrease from the bottom upward toward the top, their ends reaching nearly to the outer sides of the fingers projecting from the bar G. The open part of the frame A between the sides Bv B and C C may be covered with any suitable material, as sheet metal, wood, leather, Sto.; ora receptacle-such as a bag-may be attached to the rear portion ot' the said frame.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The picker, being held by the handle E, is opened by means of handle E' being turned on its support, so that the fingers projecting from the bar G are raised by the action of the toggle or elbow joint. The device isthen pushed forward among the vines until a sufficient quantity of berries has been gathered, when it is closed and drawn backward, freeing the berries within from the vines, whereupon it may be opened and the berries taken therefrom; or, if a bag or other receptacle has been placed as mentioned, the fruit may be readily poured therein. In case of the uneven wear of the points of the upper and lower fingers, their relative position can be readily adjusted by varying the length of the side bars G G and the bars F F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a cranberry-picker, the back frame, A, composed of barsB B CG, and the top frame composedof the cross-bar G', connected with the back frame by adjustable bars G, the said bars B G G G being provided with fingers H, forming an inclosure, J, substantially as described.
2. A cranberry-picker composed of a back IOO frame, a top frainchaving adjustable side bars and pivotally connected to said back frame, and lingers extending from the side and bottom bars of said back frame and i'roin the front bar of said top traine, whereby an inclosure is formed, the fingers of the top frame and bottom bar of the back frame being curved and interlocking, substantially as described.
3. A eranberryipioker composed of a. back frame and a top l'ralne pivotally connected, each of said frames having fingers secured thereto, forming an inclosure, the top frame having` adjustable sectional'side bars, whereby the lingers attached tothe front bar of the top frame may be adjusted relatively to the fingers of the bottom bar ofthe back frame, substantially as described.
4. In a cranberry-picker, the back frame, A, in combination with pieces b, the top frame composed of side bars G and cross-bars G', the lingers H, forming an inclosure, supports D D, handles E l, and short bars F and F, havcombi nation with the bars F F, adjustable bars F' F, and bars G G, substantially as described.
l'. In a cranberry-picker, the frame A, having fingers secured to the sides and bottom of said fraine, in combination with adjustable bars G, pivotally secured to blocks b, and cross-bar G', having` fingers, and the bars G composed of two parts adjustably connected by bolts or rivets, substantially as described.
