Description
LELONG & DEGAMP.
Gap-Box.
Patented Oct. 22, 1861.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
L. LELONG AND J. DECAMP, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENTS FOR FEEDING PERCUSSION-CAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,531, dated October 22, 1861.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LoUIs LELONG and JOHN DECAMP, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented Improvements in Percussion Gap Primers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had herein to the drawings which accompany this specification and make part of the same.
The nature of our invention consists in constructing a self-feeding eap-inserter as a handle to and in combination with a primer of a peculiar construction.
Figure l is a front side view of the whole primer. Fig. 2 is the cap -holder open, to show its internal arrangements. Fig. 3 shows the construction of the parts for holding and releasing the percussion-cap; Fig. 4, the arrangement for priming.
The same letters refer to the same parts in each figure.
The percussioncaps are placed with their open ends upward in the box, Fig. 2, which is of the exact depth needed to keep the caps from turning over when the lid is closed, yet to admit of their moving freely in the box. Upon turning the box with the end a downward, the gravity of the caps will, from the peculiar pointed shape of the end a of the box, place a single cap on the spot marked 7) in the drawings, in which it stands against the box on one side and against the jaw c on the other side. The jaw c vibrates on a hinge, d, and is moved by the small knob e, and held by the spring '0. \Vhile the box is held with the end a downward, a pressure upon the knob 6 will move the jaw so as to allow the cap to slip to the end of the box A, and be held there by the end of the jaw c, the end a of the box A not being sufficiently open to allow of its falling out. A part of the lid of the box covering the end a, right over the cap, is removed, to admit the nipple of the lock on the firearm, but not open enough to allow the cap to come out. A part of the side of the box A is hinged to the box at f, the loose piece being shown by g. This piece 9 is at liberty to open outward, being held shut by the spring h. The end a of the box is made pointed, to allow the cap to be placed on the nipple while the cap is yet in the box A, and when on the nipple a Very slight mot-ion releases it from the box and leaves it on the nipple. At the opposite end a of the box A a primer of a peculiar construction is aflixed in such a position that the box A forms a very convenient handle for the same.
The tube B has a small cup, 2', attached to it on one side, the bottom end being open and of the same size inside as the percussion-caps, to fit easily onto the same nipple as the caps. Another tube or box fits snugly into B, and can slide freely therein. This box 0 is held and guided by the screw or pin j, working in the slot is. Between the bottom of the inner box or tube, 0, and the bottom of the outer tube or box, B, a spiral'spring, m, is placed, which keeps the inner box, C, up as far as the slot 75 will allow the pin 3' to move.
In the center of the bottom of the tube or box 0 a small case, n, is securely fastened, into the top of which the knob 0 is screwed, pressing on and holding the cap 1), which closes the top of the box 0.
To the knob 0 is attached the pin 1', intended as a convenience for opening or cleaning the touch-l1ole in a nipple.
At 8, in the side of the box 0, a hole is made, and a corresponding slot is cut out of but not through the side of the outside case, B, ending in a hole which opens into the cup i, the slot being no wider than the dimension of the hole 5. Then the box 0 is supplied with the powder and the knob 0 is pressed down, a portion of the powder will pass through the hole 8 into the slot t, and be discharged into the cup 43 through the hole opening thereinto through the side of the box orcase B, and of course when the cup 2 is placed on the nipple of the lock of the fire-arm the powder will be inserted into the touch-hole through the cap 2'.
For the convenience of suspension a ring, w, is affixed to the case B.
WVe do not claim the parts separately.
Vhat we claim and desire to secure is- The percussion-cap holder and primer, when constructed, arranged, and combined substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein above set forth.
LOUIS LELONG. JOHN DEOAMP. W'itnesses:
W. M. Goonrne, J. M. MILns.
