IMPLEMENT FOR BDGING 0R TUNNING BRIGKS.
No. 386,820. Patented Feb. 23, 1886.
MA -Nlfayip UNITED STATES AQUILLA G. OSSMAN,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF BUCYRUS, OHIO.
IMPLEMENT FOR EDGING OR TURNING BRICKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 336,820, dated February 23, 1886.
Serial No. 179,893. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, AQUILLA G. OssMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bucyrns, in the county of Crawford, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Implement for Edging and Turning Bricks, of which the following is a specilcation.
My invention has relation to improvements in implements for edging and turning bricks on the drying-floor; and the object is to provide an implement by which the bricks or forms may be turned up from their flat sides onto their edges more expeditiously than by hand or by the implements heretofore used for the purpose; and the invention consists in a support or frame having a handle and provided with a series of depending crosspieces secured across the supporting piece or frame, said crosspieces being arranged at proper distances apart to set withone face against the bricks as they may be disposed on the drying'tloor, whereby a number of bricks can be turned from their flat sides onto their edges.
M y invention further consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims made hereto.
I have fully and clearly illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and where- 1n- Figure l is a perspective View of the implement, showing it applied to a number of bricks. Figure 2 is a similar View showing the bricks turned on edge. Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the cross-pieces. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section thereof, and Fig 5 shows a primary construction of the implement.
Like parts in the drawings are identified by the same letters of reference.
The letter A designates the support or frame, which may be of light metal, and consists ofa bar bent into U shape, the side bars being parallel to each other, and on this part A are securedor fitted a number of crosspieces, A, arranged at such distances apart as to set over the bricks as they are generally disposed on the dryingoor.
In the preferred construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the frame consists of a small round metal bar, A, bent into U shape, and
the cross-pieces A fitted thereto. The crosspieces A' consist of a thin metal plate, a, of about the length of a common brick and not so deep as the thickness of the bricks, and formed with a lip or ridge, a, extending along the lower edge on that side intended to set against the brick. Apertures a?, to receive the bars of the frame. are made in the cross-pieces, and on the top are formed vertical studs or stems a3, which are screwthreaded to receive tnreaded nuts, washers a4 being tted over the stems, whereby the crosspieces are clamped to the bars in any desired arrangement.
The letter B designates the handle, having a cross-head, b, with eyes at the ends to tit over the screw-studs on the cross-pieces, and is secured in place by the nuts, substantially as shown. A brace-rod, b. is pivoted to the cross-bar at the head of the frame, and has its free end projected through an eye, b2. set in the handle. This brace-rod permits the handle, when set on any cross-piece, to be braced thereto by the adj ustability ot' the rod through the eye on the handle.
The operation is readily perceived by inspection of the drawings. The implement is set over a number of bricks and pulled with sufficient force in the direction ot' the hand to turn the bricks on edge.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The implement for edging bricks herein described, consisting of a supportingpiece having a number ot' depending cross-pieces rigidly secured thereto and provided with a handle, substantially as described.
2. rlhe implement for edging bricks, consisting of a support or frame, a series oldepending cross-pieces adj ustably secured there- 9 to, and an adjustable and detachable handle, substantially as described.
3. The frame A, bent into U shape, the dcpending adjustable cross-pieces A. cl-.nnped thereto, the handle B, having a cross-head formed with eyes in the ends, and the adjustable braoeArod b, all combined substantially as described, and for the purpose stated.
ln witness whereof Iv have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two attesting witnesses.
AQUILLA G. OSSMAN.
