CLIP FOR LEAVES OF MUSIC FOLIOS, 630. No. 331,339.
Patented Mar. 9. 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. VALENTINE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLIP FOR LEAVES OF MUSIC-FOLIOS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337.639, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed J nne 15, 1885. Serial No. 168,754.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. VALEN- TINE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clips for Leaves of Music-Folios, 850., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide an attachable and detachable clip for use more particularly upon the leaves of music-folios, 850., to hold the leaves separated from each other, and in a manner to facilitate their being turned, as may be required. in the reading of the music represented by the folio.
This improved clip is composed in substance of two spring-jaws, which are continuous with and opposite to each other. and are in one piece of metal or other suitable ma terial, and, as a whole. it is adapted to receive and grasp aleaf flatwise between them, and has either one or both ofitsjaws, preferably both, made with a return and projecting end sutficient to hold the leaf or leaves adjoining the leaf to which the clip is attached separated therefrom, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings this improved clip is illustrated, and Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book or music folio opened with a clip applied to one of its leaves. Fig. 2 is an edge View of a book-folio, showing a series of clips applied. Fig. 3 is a perspective View (enlarged) of the clip shown in preceding figures. Figs. 4 and 5 are edge views, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view, of a clip of the improved construction illustrating a modification in its construction.
In the drawings,A represents the improved clip applied to the leaf B of a book or music folio, 0, one to a single leaf thereof.
The clip A consists of a spring-jaw in two parts.D D",at one end continuous with each other and adapted to be opened from and to close upon each other, and to be capable of receiving between them the leaf 1 of a music-folio, O, and closing against its opposite sides, thus attaching the clip to said sheet. The spring (No model.)
jaws D D", either one or both, and at their open and receiving ends, havea return bend, E, which, when the clip is attached to one leaf of a music-folio, secures its separation'from a leaf next adjoining, and thereby places it in position for easy handling when occasion may require. The return bend E of the jaw or jaws D D", and which makes the so separating part of the clip, places its support of the leaf at a point bet-ween the two ends of clip, and thus with a formation of said return bend or bends. shown in Figs. 3 and 5, plainly said point of support is brought close to the edge of the leaf, the most preferable place to have it.
The clip A, herein described, may be made of sheet metal, metal wire, or other suitable materiahand of various forms, some of which are shown in the various figures of the drawlngs.
The clip A. as shown, is made with a handlepiece, a; but this may be dispensed with.
Although this improved clip has been particularly described in connection with its application to the leaves of music-folios, it is applieable to the leaves of other folios--as, for instance, of booksand so it is not to be limited in that regard.
In the making of these clips it is preferred to stamp and form them out of sheet metal, and all of one piece. The advantages ofthis improved clip especially considered in relation to its use for the leaves of music-folios are so obvious as notto require mention or enumeration.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A clip composed of spring or elastic jaws D D, having a return bend, E, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
I11 testimony whereof I'have hereunto set my hand in the presence'of two subscribing witnesses.
I SAMUEL w. VALENTINE.
