, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN J. Blinsrow, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oheneyville, parish of Rapids, State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Brick, Tile, &c., of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
On the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine complete, with cover of mixing-box raised above same. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the brick-former, or delivery end of the mixing-box. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the latter figure, with a portion of the mixing-shaft and feed-screw. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the mixing-shaft and knives. Fig. 5 shows the said shaft without knives. Fig. 6 is a plan or top view of a portion of an endless carrier for conveying the finished material from the mixing-box. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of one of the pallets or links of the aforesaid carrier. Fig. 8 represents the face of a knife-blade and frame, also a cross-section of the knife, by which the material forced through the former is cut into proper lengths. Fig. 9 is a cross-section of the mixing box, looking toward the rear thereof. 7
The letter A designates a semi-cylindrical mixing-box provided with a perpendicular head, I), and tapering discharge end 0. This box is designed to be supported in a horizontal manner on suitable legs connected therewith, or by means of foundation timbers or sills, as shown at d in Figs. 1 and 9. The upper edge of the aforesaid box is surrounded by a flange, e, to permit of the bolting thereto of a flanged cover, E, which is made with a perpendicular head and sides, as shown at f Y f, and with an open top, f, for the introduction of the clay, as well as to permit of an inspection of the interior of the box during the mixing process. This cover, like the box, is
made With a tapering discharge end, f, and both box and cover are provided at this latter end with projecting flanges g against which the former or delivery-section G is socured, as hereinafter described. The former or delivery-section is divided by suitable partitions into a series of longitudinal rectangular tubes, h h h, through which the tempered clay is forced in separate and distinct streams. The upper part of the former is provided with ,a journal-bearing, i, for the reception of one end of a longitudinal central shaft, 1, the opposite end of which is journaled in a bracket, k, and in a socket formed in a cross head or plate, It, that is fitted over the ends of a pair of side bars or bolts, H, the oppo site ends of which pass through a rim, or through lugs formed on the delivery-section or former G. These bolts have their ends provided with screw-threads and nuts, to permit of the cross-head being drawn against the adjacent end of the shaft, and thus prevent endwise movement of the same.
That part of the shaft I which operates Withinthesemi'cylindrical portion of the mixing-box is provided with a series of blades, we, having shanks adapted to fit in sockets m, made in ribs m, that are spirally arranged around the shaft, or on rings or hubs secured thereon. The blades are held in the aforesaid sockets at any desired angle by means of set-screws n.
That portion of the shaft which operates within the tapering part of the mixing-box is provided with a diminishing screw, N, which serves to carry forward the tempered clay and force the same, in solid and compact condition, through the division-tubes of the delivery-section or former onto a carrier, to be conveyed off, and at same time cutinto requisite lengths, as hereinafter described.
Motion is imparted to the machine from any suitable power through a spur-wheel O, which is secured on theshaft I between the bracket is and cross-head k.
The letter P designates the carrier-frame, which is erected immediately in front of the delivery end of the mixing-box, and on the same longitudinal line thereof. Near the opposite ends of this frame are journaled a pair of shafts, p 1), each having wheels, preferably with octagonal peripheries, as at p 17, secured between the journal-bearings thereof. The angles of these wheels are recessed, as shown at q, to engage the lugs q, formed on the inner sides of the plates It, whichare adapted to be pivotally connected in such number as to form an endless carrier of sufficicnt length to fit overthe octagonal wheels and be operated by the force of clay issuing from the former or delivery-section of the mixing -boX, assisted by motive power obtained through an endless band, 1", which operates over a pulley, r, secured to one end of a shaft, 19, and a pulley, r, fitted on a shaft, 1", the latter j ourna-led at the rear end of the mixing-box and provided with a second pulley, t, of such diameter that its periphery shall be in close contact with the edge of the rim of the spur-wheel O, and thus obtain motion therefrom. The friction transmitted by the band is regulated by an idler composed of a small pulley. t, journaled in the upper end of a stirrup or strap, s, through which the band 1* is passed, so that the pulley shall op crate on the upper surface thereof and the strap be suspended beneath the same, thereby forming a support for the lever t, one end of which is pivotally connected wit-h the side of the mixing-box, as shown at 13, while its opposite end is provided with an adjustable weight, it, through the instrumentality of which the amount of friction on the band is increased or diminished whenever necessary. Each section or plate R of the endless carrier has a slot formed in the middle thereof, as
shown at a, for the passage of a knife, V,
whereby the clay is cut into requisite lengths.
The aforesaid knives are mounted in frames having swivel-jointed rods V, connecting the sides thereof for the purpose of stiffening same, and having lower bars, V, adapted to operate in guides V, a pair of which are connected with the under side of each plate R, at or near the ends of the slots therein. The outer ends of the bars V are provided with loose wheels or rollers 00, for operating against the inner edges of endless ways W, that are secured (between the carrier-wheels) to theframe thereof. The upper part of these ways have their lower edges provided with inclined slots or grooves a, into and through which the kniferollersw successively pass during the operation of the machine, thus causing the knives to be forced upward through the slotted plates and the clay resting upon the same,'making a clean cut through the latter, and then returning to their normal positions under their respective plates as the rollers pass out of the rear-ends of the grooves. A roller, 00, is journaled across the carrier-frame immediately above the highest part of the grooves a, so as to operate onthe upper surface of the clay, and thus prevent the level of same from being disturbed by the upward action of the knives. This roller may be provided, if desired, with raised letters or figures, so as to stamp each brick or tile as it passes beneath same. Additional rollers may be. journaled in front of the aforesaid roller,
if deemed necessary, to prevent displacement of the material as the knives first enter same.
The plates composing the endless carrier have their under sides provided with lugs, (not necessarily shown,) in which are journaled grooved rollers for operating on the outer edges of the ways, soas to lessen the amount of friction 011 same, as well as to insure a perfectly horizontal movement to said plates while traveling along the upper edges of the ways.
In machines for making brick the angles of the wheels 11 12 should be nine inches apart, in order that the bricks shall be cut off at the ordinary lengths; but for tile-making machines the said angles may be .of greater or lesser lengths, according to the size of tile required.
The brick or tile are removed from the carrier by attendants stationed at either side of the same, and near the rear end thereof.
To insure a regular feed to the machine, the material should be conveyed to the mixingbox thereof by means of a carrier or elevator.
Although not shown on the drawings, the journal-bearing in the former or delivery-section may be provided with .a stuffing-box, in order to prevent the clay or plastic material from entering therein and interfering with the working thereof.
Having described my invention ,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In combination with the mixing-box of a brick-machine, a shaft having spiral ribs provided with perforations, and knives adapted to fit said perforations and be secured at any desired angle therein by means of set-screws, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a mixing-box having a tapering delivery end, a former adapted to fit said end, and a mixing-shafthaving its inner end jou-rnaled in the former and its outer end in a cross-head, as described, the former and cross-head directly connected by bolts, so as to resist endwise movement of the shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the mixing-box A, shaft I, and spur wheel 0, with a carrier mounted in a frame at the discharge end of the mixing-box, the carrier and mixing-box.
