To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, WILLIAM C. HUB- BARD, of Durham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, and XVILLIAM M. BROWNELL, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gash-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Ourinvention relates to a cash-box wherein a till for coin and a sliding tray for bills are 7 used, each formed to receive cash of various in which similar letters of reference indicate 3 corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of our new and improved cash-box as it appears when open, the falling front and a portion of the cover being shown folded under the box and the bill-tray partially withdrawn from the body of the box. Fig. 2 isa transversesectional elevation of the box, showing the same closed in full lines and open in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the box open, the cover being shown folded under the falling front and body of the box and the billtray partially withdrawn.

The body A of the box is composed of the end walls, a a, back wall, I), and bottom 0.

\Vithin the body A are placed the change or coin till .13 and bill-tray C, the former resting upon the inwardly-pro}ecting flanges or cleats d (1, attached to the inner surfaces of the end walls, a, the latter sliding beneath the till upon the bottom 0. The till is by preference made of wood and formed with shallow pockets b and troughs b, for the reception of change or small coin, while the tray 0 is by preference made of tin and divided by the transverse partitions 0 into compartments for bills of different denominations.

The box is constructed to be closed by the falling front or panel D and the cover E. The falling front D is hinged to the frontedge of the bottom 6 of the body of the box, so that when the box is open the tray 0 may be drawn out of the body of the box, so that both the till and tray will stand conveniently open one above the other to receive money, and to facilitate the handling of it in rapid transactions. The cover E is hinged to the upper or outer edge of the falling front or panel D by an open-back hinge, e, or one the hinge pin or red of which is on a plane with the edge or outer surface of the panel, so that the cover may be folded back to occupy a position below the panel and body of the box, as shown in Fig. 3, in which position the panel Dstands in a horizontal plane in line with the bottom 0, and forms a table or flat support for the tray 0 when the same is drawn out for use from the body A of the box. The panel D is hinged to the outer or open edge of the bottom 0 by an opeuback hinge,f, or one in which the hinge pin or rod is on the same plane with the edge or lower surface of the bottom, so the panel may be folded back under and flat against the lower surface of the bottom 0, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In this position of the panel the cover will fold to horizontal position flat against the panel D, and will project in front of the box and form a table or support for the tray 0 when drawn out for use.

While it is practicable to connect the cover E and falling front or panel D so the cover may be reversed and folded under the box and panel, so the latter serves to support the tray G, as shown in Fig. 3, we prefer to adapt the panel to be folded entirely beneath the body of the box, as shown in Fig. 1, forin this position the cover E remains right side up, so that the narrow front and side flanges, g and 9, thereof serve as stops-the former to pre vent the tray 0 from being drawn entirely out of the body A, the latter to prevent the tray from lateral displacement when drawn out, and rests partly upon the cover and partly in the box.

The back wall, I), of the body of the box is ICO provided with a lock, h, and the cover E with the lock hooks or catches h, so the box may be securely locked with a key a hen the cover and panel D are closed upon the body, as shown in Fig. 2, and the top of the coverE is provided with a handle, t, for carrying the box, and the coveris recessed orsunken about the handle, as shown at i, so the handle may be folded down in the recess on the same plane with or a little below the outer surface of the cover, so it will not preventthe cover from resting fiat upon a table when folded back under the boX.

By constructing the box as described the same is not only convenient and practical, but when open occupies small space, and when the tray 0 is drawn out all the money-holding receptacles are accessible at the same time without shifting any part of the box, and there is no danger of the tray getting out of position, and no annoyance either in opening or closing the box; and, furthermore, the box is firm and rigid both when open and when closed, and is durable and comparatively cheap to construct.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The body A of the box, made open at the top and front, in combination with the cover and the falling panel, hinged together, the panel being hinged to the bottom of the body A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The body A, made open at the top and front, in combination with the till B, sliding tray C, and the falling front D and cover E, hinged to each other, the falling front being hinged to the edge of the bottomc of the body A, whereby the cover or front may be folded under the body A, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The body A, made open at the top and front, in combination with the falling front D, hinged to the bottom 0 of the body by an open-back hinge, and the cover E, hinged to the edge of the falling front, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
