UYTNESSES IN. PETERS, Fhdomho np UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn.
DAVID s. TRIMMER, or SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
MEANS FOR PRODUCING AND SWAGING BULLETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,171, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed July 24, 1885. Renewed March .25, 1886. Serial No. 106.586. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID S. TRIMMER, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain Improvements .in Means for Producing and Swaging Bullets,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means for producing bullets, particularly those which are grooved circumferentially, of uniform size and density.
To this end it consists in a divided mold or matrix removably seated in a confining ring or plate, and combined with a swaging die or plunger which slides closely within the open base of the mold.
It also consists in the combination, in a hand-tool,of the divided mold and its confining-ring with a closing-plate provided with an orifice to admit the molten metal, a sharp edge to sever the base or sprue, and with the movable die or plunger, which is brought into position over the mold by the movement of the plate.
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of my improved hand-tool for casting and swaging bullets. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same on the linear as; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on the line 3 y; Fig. 4, a view illustrating a modification of the same with a pivoted instead of a sliding plate.
In carrying my invention into effect I first provide a mold or matrix, A A, having an internal cavity corresponding in size and form with the required bullet, with the exception that it is elongated at the base to admit bullets or blanks of a length greater than required when finished. This mold is divided longitudinally through the center into two complementary parts, A A. Externally the mold is made of a cylindrical or slightlytapering form, and adapted to fit within an encircling ring or plate, B, by which the two parts are held firmly in close contact with each other when in action. At any suitable point, preferably at the lower end, the mold is provided with a small opening or vent, a, through which any surplus metal may escape during the swaging operation.
IVhen the mold is to be embodied in a portable implement, I connect the parts A A to handles or levers G, pivoted together after the manner of a pair of tongs, and mount upon the upper face of one of the mold-sections a horizontally-sliding plate, D, which serves to close the mouth or base portion of the mold when the parts are in operative position. This sliding plate may be attached by a slot and screw and hinged to slide at its edges be tween lips on the respective parts of the mold, as shown in the drawings; or it may be attached in any appropriate manner. The sliding plate is provided with an inlet-opening, b,'which presents a sha-r cutting-edge at the lower side. The plate 's further provided with a verticaly-sliding die or plunger, E, of proper size to fit tightly within the top or base portion of the mold'cavity. The parts are so arranged that when the plate is moved backward it will present the opening I) over the mold cavity, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the molten metal may be introducedtherethrough into the mold, and that when the plate is moved forward it will carry the opening 1) away from the mold and bring the plunger E thereover.
The plunger may be shouldered, as shown, or otherwise constructed to limitits downward movement, and thus insure uniformity in the size of the bullets, and, if desired, it may be combined with a lilting-spring, e, as shown in Fig. 2, by which it is restored to its normal position after being bent downward.
In making use of this implement the molten metal is introduced through the opening 1) into the mold-cavity in quantity sufficient to form a bullet somewhat larger than is demanded. The plate is then driven forward, thereby shearing off the end of the bullet .and bring ing the die or plunger directly thereover. The plunger is then driven downward by a blow thereon or by pressure, the effect of which is to condense the bullet, cause it to assome the precise form of the mold, and reduce it to the length required.
Instead of arranging the plate to slide, as in the figures above described, it may be pivoted, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- I 1. In combination with the divided mold and its encircling "ring, the movablm plate -In testimony whereof I hereunto-set my provided with the inlet-orifice b, and the hand,this'29th day of J une,j1'885, in the pres- 1o plunger E. ence of two attesting witnesses. 2. In combination with the divided m0 ld. DAVID TRIMMER 5 having a conical exterior surface, the encircling ring B, the movable plate D, having the Witnesses: orifice b, the plunger E, and the spring to-re- C. L. DUVALL, tract such plunger. 0. M. SELLERS.
