ANDREW S. UPSON AND `HENRY A. COWLES, OF UN IONVILLE, CONN.
SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,616, dated .Tune 15, 1886.
Application filed February 19, 1885. Serial No. 156,339.
T0 all whom it 11i/ay concern..-
Be it known that we, ANDREW S. UPSON and HENRY A. GoWLEs, both of Unionville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the Vaccompanying drawings, Where- Figure l is a plan view of our improved device. Fig. 2 is a view in cross-section of one of the legs of the same on plane denoted by line a: fr of Fig. 1.
The object of our invention is to provide a tool for general use about a desk used by a book-keeper or clerk, which tool combines in a single structure and in a new and convenient form the advantages and functions of several tools, and also possesses novel features peculiar to itself.
This improvement consists in a square having a beveled outer edge, which may be graduated, and also a beveled inner edge, forming a continuous tearing-edge with a right angle in its length.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the body of the tool as a whole, which is made, preferably, of metal-as brass or steel-aud in general outline resembles a carpenters square, having the legs b and c arranged at right angles with each other. One
of the legs, as b, is beveled along its outer edge, so that it may be used as a ruler, and this leg may also be provided with graduations b. The inner edges of both legs are also beveled,
(No model.)
(both on the same face,) so that a continuous edge, d, is formed of proper shape as to crosssection, and of su-ch outline that the tool may be used iu tearing a check or the like from a book or sheet of paper.
At a suitable point on the upper surface of 4o ing it upon a leaf in such a position that the u inner edge, d, conforms to the two lines along which the check is to be torn, and while the tool is rmly held the' check is removed by pulling on its free corner iu the usual .manner.
We claim as our invention- As an improved article of manufacture, the within-described tool, oonsisti ng of the flat legs b and c, united at right angles to each other, having an outer bevel, b', along one edge, and the inner and continuous bevel, el, along the inner edge of the legs, and the handle e, all substantially as described.
