Definitions
- An object is to provide a yarn of the above type having novel and improved characteristics.
- Another object is to provide improved apparatus for producing such a yarn.
- the known processes for the manufacture of looped yarn consists in first forming the loops about one or more core threads and then binding the loops thus obtained in a separate operation.
- the laying of the loops is effected either on special looms, such as Hamel looms, in which a plurality of threads is unwound at different speeds so as to form the loops due to the difference in length in the component threads, or on special looms provided with hollow spindles and comprising a needle on which one of the threads is wound so as to achieve different contraction with respect to the core yarn.
- the binding of the loops is effected on a separate gathering and twisting device.
- the manufacture of a bound looped yarn comprising two core threads is made in a single operation. This is done by means of a process which is characterized by the introduction of two core threads, under constant tension and with constant spacing, into a hollow spindle which supplies, at high speed, an effect thread which is wound about the two core threads in such manner as to form the loops.
- the yarn thus formed is passed into a second hollow spindle supplying a thread for binding the loops.
- This process permits the utilization, for the manufacture of a looped yarn, of conventional equipment including two hollow spindles arranged for wrapping one thread on another thread, the said apparatus being modified mainly by the addition of a devie for the introduction of the core threads
- said device comprises, according to the invention, two thread guides each of which is secured to a fixed support in such manner as to form a constant entry angle between the two core threads which travel under constant tension into the upper hollow spindle, so that the efiect thread wound on these two angularly spaced core threads forms loops.
- the constant tension of the core threads is obtained by the conventional feed system used with hollow spindles.
- the entry angle of the core threads is preferably adjustable, so as to permit a variation in the diameter of the loops in the elfect thread.
- This adjustment is obtained in accordance with the invention by designing the support for the thread guides in the form of a plate formed with a plurality of grooves in which each thread guide may be secured in releasable manner.
- variation in loop size may be obtained by varying the angular velocity of the bobbin supplying the effect thread.
- the first hollow spindle is preferably provided with a funnel the large section of which is located at a level higher than that of the oritfice in the spindle defining the winding point of the effect yarn.
- FIG. 1 is a front elevation of an apparatus embodying the invention
- FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus of FIG. 1;
- FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the apparatus for introducing the core yarns into the spindle.
- the two core threads A and B supplied by bobbins 1 and 2 travel through two thread guides 3 and then pass between a pressure cylinder 4 and a supply cylinder 6 before passing, under constant tension, through a device 7 which causes the two core threads A "and B to enter at a constant angle a a first hollow spindle 8
- This hollow spindle supports and entrains a spool 9 supplying, at high speed, an effect thread C with winds around the core threads to form loops 11 about the core threads A and B.
- the composite thread D having loops 11 then travels through a second hollow spindle 12 which supports and entrains a spool 13 supplying a thread E which, after having travelled through a ring arrangement 14 is wound on the composite thread D, binding the loops 11.
- the yarn F having bound loops which is finally obtained changes its direction and passes over a bar 16 and is wound on a receiving bobbin 17 driven by a take-off roller 18, after having travelled through a yarn guide 19.
- the device 7 (FIGURE 3) comprises essentially a plate 21 fixed on a support section 22 and formed with a specific number of grooves 23 (6 in the example illustrated) symmetrically distributed on either side of the median vertical plane extending through the axis XX of the two hollow spindles 8 an 12.
- two thread guides 24 Secured, in removable manner, in the two grooves of a pair of symmetrical grooves are two thread guides 24 having a pig tail arrangement 26 for the guiding of the core threads A and B.
- the thread guides are cranked at right angles in their rear portion 27 and this cranked portion is inserted in an aperture 28 formed in the groove 23.
- the two thread guides are maintained in the pair of grooves which has been selected, in order to define the desired angle a by means of a securing strap 29 which may be locked for example by means of winged nuts permitting ready dismantling and reassembly.
- the cylindrical inlet orifice 8a in the hollow spindle 8 is surmounted and surrounded by a funnel 31 the upper end 31a of which defines the level at which the winding of the effect thread C is eifected and which corresponds to a horizontal distance between the core threads which is greater than the distance separating the threads at right angles with the cylindrical section 8a.
- This arrangement has the advantage that it permits the widening of the adjustment range in respect of the diameter to the loops 11, as defined by the number of grooves 23.
- the said funnel may furthermore be connected to the end of the hollow spindle 8 in such manner that it can be secured relatively to the section 8a at an adjustable point in the height thereof,
- Conventional adjustment means 50 may be provided on the funnel and spindle, whereby the displacement of the core threads at the point of wrapping may be varied by axially adjusting the distance between said funnel and spindle.
- An apparatus for producing a novelty yarn which apparatus comprises a pair of hollow rotary spindles, means feeding a pair of core threads through said spindles in succession, means carried by each of said spindles to wrap an eflect thread around said core threads, means spacing said core threads apart in the first spindle before wrapping, guide means for guiding said core threads into said first spindle at a predetermined relative angle, and means for adjusting the spacing means to vary the loop size when said core threads are brought together after being wrapped by the said first effect thread, wherein the adjusting means comprises a pair of guide members and a support plate having spaced means for securing said guide members in different lateral positions.
- An apparatus for producing a novelty yarn which apparatus comprises a pair of hollow rotary spindles, means feeding a pair of core threads through said spindles in succession, means carried by each of said spindles to wrap an effect thread around said core threads, means spacing said core threads apart in the first spindle before wrapping, guide means for guiding said core threads into said first spindle at a predetermined relative angle, and means for adjusitng the spacing means to vary the loop size when said core threads are brought together after being wrapped by the said first thread, wherein the guide means includes a funnel disposed to receive the angularly displaced threads, and means is provided for adjusting the axial position of said funnel so as to vary the displacement of said core threads at the point of wrapping.
- the method of making a novelty yarn which comprises feeding a pair of core threads in predetermined spaced apart relationship into a first wrapping zone, so that said core threads are angularly displaced as they are fed into said first wrapping zone, wrapping a first effect thread around said core threads in said zone while said first effect thread is so displaced in a manner to form loops when said core threads are brought together, while varying the angle of displacement for varying the loop effect, passing the wrapped core threads into a second wrapping zone and wrapping a second effect thread around said first threads in said last zone, tobind said first effect threads in place to form a yarn having spaced irregular loops along its length.
