Description

(No Model.)
S. CONRAD.
. HOLDBAGK FOR VEHICLES. No. 346,268. Patented July 27, 1886.
r f j hi-S attoz-wu UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
SAMUEL CONRAD, OF KIRKS MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDBACK FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3%6268, dated July 27, 1886.
Application tiled March 16, 1886. Serial No. 195,459. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL CONRAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kirks Mills, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to holdback-irons for the shafts of vehicles, its object being to form two holdbaeks on one plate, and these at an angle to the shaft, as will be herein set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represent s a side view, and Fig. 2 a eross-section.
In the figures, A represents the holdbackplate, which is made of metal, and confined or secured to the shaft B by screws or other suitable means. The plate A is provided with two long loops, a a, for the reception of the breeching-strap.
x 00 represent enlargements of the plate A at the rear ends of the loops a a. These enlargements, as seen, throw the loops a a at an angle to the plate, and consequently to the shaft. The upper sides of the loops are rounded, to protect the leather strap of the harness. The object of this construction of plate is twofold.
It gives two openings for the reception of the breeching-strap, to accommodate differentsized horses, and then the inclination of the loops brings the strain in holding back in line, or nearly so, with the ring of the harness to which the holdback-strap is secured. This is represented in dotted line, Fig. 1, as seen by the strap 0.
It is obvious that by connecting the breechingstraps directly to the holdback-iron the use of intermediate rings or hooks is obviated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what; I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Aholdbaek-iron consisting of a plate secured to the under side of avehicle-shaft and having two angular enlargements thereon, said enlargements being provided with slots which are set at an angle to and incline toward the rear of the shaft, and which have their upper edges rounded to serve as a bearing for the breeching-strap,substantial1y as herein shown.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
S AMUEL CONRAD.
