PATENT OFFICE. 1
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 347,646. dated August 1'], 1886.'
,- Application filed April 22, 1886. Serlsl No. 199.810. (hlodel.l v
To all whom it may concern.- Be itknown that 1, THEODORE 1!. W. SonMIn'r, a resident of ])ayton,i-n the county of Montgomery and-State ot' Ohioyhave in-.
provide a box made from blanks andhaving at its edges and over the joints between the body, the cover, and the bottom a lining made folded down for shipping or packing and readily folded in shape.
Another ob'ect of my invention is to provide a top and bottom cover which enables the box to be folded down for shipping or packing, and yet forms a tight joint, all of which will be set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box, showing the lid raised. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the body of the box is formed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blank shown in Fig. 2 folded in the form to receive the top and bottom cover piece. Fig.
4 represents a blankfor the cover. v 1 represents the front edge ofrthe box; 2, the rear side; 3, the left-hand end; 4, the righthand end ofthc box.- It is made from the 35 blank A. (Shown in Fig. 2.)
5 6 7 represent the lining-flaps at the top of the box.
8 9 represent slits in the front side of the box, into which tongues 10 11 are inserted for 0 fastening the parts together.
12 13 14 represent lining-flaps for the bottom of the box, corresponding in shape and position with the flaps 5 6.7, at the top.
15 16 represent flaps or doubled-over pieces for uniting blank A (shown in Fig.2) to blank B. (Shown in Fig. 4.),They are pastedto important functions:
of detachable flaps, so that the box can be blanks, the flaps 15 16 being pasted onto the my hand the said parts, as shown in dotted lines 15 1.6 in said figures. Y
0 represents the top cover or lid of the box, and is provided with a tongue, 11,. on the doubled-over piece 1.7, which passes down the front side of the box and into the slit 8.
- 1.8 represents a corresponding flap, provided with a tongue, 10, which passes around the bottom edge of the box and into the slit 9.
The lining-flaps 5 6 7 12 1344 periorm two first, they ack thejoints and prevent the entrance of dust around the covers; second, they form v stiffening or strengthening pieces, so that I obtain a 1n uch stronger packing-box than where these l ningflaps are not employed.
-The box is readily and quickly madeof two back edge of the box.
For shipping or packing, the box may be bent across the ends 3 4 at the lines marked a b, so as to fold theb'ox down flat. Iclaimb 1. -A paper box formed of two blanks, AB, the blank A forming the endsand front side ofthe box, and flap B forming the rear side and the top and bottom covers, the blanks being fastened together by tongues and sl ts formed'in them, substantially as'speeified. 2. A paper box composed of the two blanks. A B, the latterhaving the lining-flaps 5 6 7 12 13 14, folded and bent to protect the edges of the box, and the former bent to form the rear side and top and bottom cover, and united together by the flaps 15 16, substantially as specified. g J I 3. Aknoekdown paper box composed of the blanks A B, folded, bent, and united together,
the blank B being provided with a shippingfold, a b, substantially as specified.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto set THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT. Witnesses: p
Jonn W. Baron, SUMNER '1. SMITH.
